Mysteries of the Universe explores the biggest questions about existence in simple, clear language. Is there a God? What happens after we die? Does the soul exist? Did time begin with the universe? What lies inside a black hole? Are we alone? And why is there something instead of nothing? Each episode follows the evidence across science, philosophy, consciousness, space, time, life, and death. We examine what we know, the leading ideas, the competing explanations, and the mysteries that remain unanswered. For anyone who has looked at the universe and wondered what it all means.Forbidden Knowledge Network 科学

  • Could the Universe Be Someone Else’s Dream?
    2026/09/24

In a monitored sleep experiment published in 1981, selected lucid dreamers made prearranged eye-movement signals while laboratory recordings confirmed that they remained in rapid eye movement sleep. It was a small but important achievement: an experience inside a dream could leave a timed trace for observers outside it.

That result gives new force to an old question. The transmitted Zhuangzi contains the butterfly passage, asking whether Zhuang Zhou dreamed of being a butterfly or the butterfly dreamed of being Zhou. René Descartes later used dreams to challenge the certainty of sensory experience. George Berkeley went further, defending an idealist account in which physical objects depend on minds. Modern dream laboratories have now shown limited two-way communication with some sleepers during REM sleep.

But how far does that analogy go? A dream can feel like a complete world from within. Researchers can sometimes communicate with a dreamer from outside the dream. Does that make it reasonable to wonder whether our universe has an outside dreamer?

This episode follows the philosophical arguments and the controlled experiments, separating what has been measured from what has been imagined. It considers ordinary waking reality, philosophical idealism, lucid dreaming, and simulation arguments, then asks what evidence would actually be needed before the literal claim of a cosmic dreamer could move beyond speculation.

  • What If the Universe Is Inside a Black Hole?
    2026/09/17

In April 2019, the Event Horizon Telescope released the first horizon-scale image of M87*, revealing a bright ring of radio emission around a dark central shadow. The result gave scientists powerful new evidence that black holes exist as general relativity predicts. But every photon used to reconstruct that image came from outside the boundary that defines a black hole. The interior remained inaccessible.

That observational limit leads to an unusual cosmological proposal: perhaps the hot, expanding beginning of our universe was the interior continuation of gravitational collapse inside a black hole in a larger parent universe. The idea has appeared in several distinct forms. Raj Kumar Pathria compared a closed universe with a Schwarzschild black hole in 1972. Joel Smoller and Blake Temple later constructed exact shock-wave cosmologies inside black-hole geometries. Nikodem Popławski proposed that spacetime torsion, sourced by particle spin at extreme density, could halt collapse and produce a bounce.

These models address a genuine boundary in physics. Classical general relativity predicts singular behavior in black holes and when cosmological equations are extended backward, but it does not provide a complete description of those limits. Still, mathematical possibility is not observational confirmation. Planck measurements of the cosmic microwave background strongly support standard near-flat Lambda-CDM cosmology, and no observation has detected a parent universe, a parent black hole, or a unique signature of black-hole ancestry.

The question is not whether black holes are real. It is whether the Big Bang was simply the earliest stage of our cosmic history, or a transition hidden behind a horizon no observer can cross.

  • Could Your Entire Life Be Happening Inside a Simulation?
    2026/09/10

On April 28, 2003, philosopher Nick Bostrom published a paper that transformed an old philosophical doubt into a modern probability argument. If future civilizations become technologically mature, if consciousness can exist in non-biological systems, and if some descendants create enormous numbers of detailed simulations of their ancestors, then simulated observers could eventually outnumber biological ones.

But that is not a discovery that humanity lives in a simulation. Bostrom’s argument reaches a three-part conclusion: either civilizations like ours usually die before reaching that stage, mature civilizations almost never create conscious ancestor simulations, or simulated observers become numerically dominant. Each branch depends on assumptions that remain unsettled.

This episode follows the argument from René Descartes’ deceiver, through Hilary Putnam’s brain-in-a-vat challenge, to Seth Lloyd’s calculations of the universe’s information-processing limits. It examines Brian Weatherson’s objection to Bostrom’s probability reasoning, David Chalmers’ argument that virtual worlds could still be real, and a physics proposal by Silas Beane, Zohreh Davoudi, and Martin Savage that asked whether a particular lattice-style simulation might leave traces in ultra-high-energy cosmic rays.

No verified glitch, physical artifact, or experiment has established that our universe is artificial. Yet the hypothesis remains difficult to close completely, because a sufficiently faithful simulation might reproduce every physical result available to observers inside it.
