In a monitored sleep experiment published in 1981, selected lucid dreamers made prearranged eye-movement signals while laboratory recordings confirmed that they remained in rapid eye movement sleep. It was a small but important achievement: an experience inside a dream could leave a timed trace for observers outside it.

That result gives new force to an old question. The transmitted Zhuangzi contains the butterfly passage, asking whether Zhuang Zhou dreamed of being a butterfly or the butterfly dreamed of being Zhou. René Descartes later used dreams to challenge the certainty of sensory experience. George Berkeley went further, defending an idealist account in which physical objects depend on minds. Modern dream laboratories have now shown limited two-way communication with some sleepers during REM sleep.
