  • Why No Kill is Failing: The Case for a Smarter Approach to Rescue
    2025/04/27

The no-kill movement promised to revolutionize animal sheltering by saving lives and ending unnecessary euthanasia. But behind the catchy slogans and glowing statistics, a different reality lurks – one that’s rarely discussed. In this eye-opening conversation with animal welfare expert Daniel Ettinger, we dig deep into the issues plaguing some shelters striving for that elusive 90% live release rate.

As a rescuer myself, I'm experiencing a system overwhelmed by its own ambitions. Shelters don't have a clear understanding of what it means to be no-kill, and communities are not set up to provide all the realities needed to make no-kill work. Instead, shelters are closing their doors when full to avoid euthanasia and maintain high live-release rates, finders are stuck with animals they can’t keep, and rescues are buckling under overflow. Even worse, some animals are warehoused for years, leading to questionable quality of life. Daniel shares a more balanced alternative – SMART (Saving More Animals Responsibly Together), an approach that addresses the root causes and focuses on community resources, transparency, and responsible care.

We discuss how the relentless pursuit of arbitrary statistics, like the 90% live release rate, has led to dangerous consequences, including the adoption of unsafe animals and public safety issues. We also explore why adopting more pets isn’t the solution and how real change starts with accessible veterinary care, housing policy reform, and community education.

This episode challenges the black-and-white thinking surrounding animal rescue and offers a fresh perspective on how we can all contribute to more sustainable, humane solutions. Tune in for an honest look at the no-kill movement and discover why we need a smarter approach to animal welfare.

  • The Day Rescue Broke Me: A Hard Truth About Helping Too Much
    2025/04/15

I broke down in the middle of a hurricane—sobbing, soaked, and desperately trying to keep my barn from blowing away—while sick kittens cried in a barely-secured shed. That’s when I realized: something had to change.

In this raw, no-holds-barred solo episode, I share the story kept quiet for too long—the mental, emotional, and physical toll of being "the yes person" in animal rescue for far too long.

With over 4,000 animals fostered, a 7-acre property turned full-blown sanctuary, and a rescue organization I’ve poured my soul into, I finally hit my limit. From losing my husband to COVID, to battling cancer while still saving animals, to holding things together through Hurricane Beryl, I’ve lived the reality behind the glossy social media posts—and it nearly destroyed me.

    This episode covers:

    • Why saying yes to every animal can mean saying no to the ones you could save
    • The emotional damage of euthanasia decisions and the savior complex in rescue culture
    • The moment I knew my passion had become a compulsion
    • Why I'm not leaving rescue, but stepping back to lead with clarity
    • How I’m building a leaner, foster-based model focused on advocacy and sustainability
    • A preview of my upcoming interview on why the no-kill movement is failing—and what ethical, SMART sheltering could look like

It's time for a new chapter—for me, and for the rescue world—one rooted in balance, boundaries, and better outcomes for everyone.

📢 If you’re a rescuer teetering on the edge of burnout, consider this episode your permission to pause, exhale, and reimagine how you serve animals without losing yourself. And if you’re someone who loves animals but isn’t in the rescue world, this is your honest, behind-the-scenes look at what rescue really demands—the beauty, the heartbreak, and the hard truths we rarely share out loud.

  • Heartworm Prevention Myths That Could Cost Your Pet’s Life
    2025/04/08

Heartworm Truths Every Pet Owner Needs to Hear with Dr. Zoo

💔 Heartworm disease is slow, painful, and entirely preventable. So why are pets still dying from it?

In this essential episode of Muddy Paws and Hairballs, Dr. Zoo shares two real-life cases that hit hard: a young German Shepherd in kidney failure at just two years old after his owners stopped prevention, and a rescue terrier whose heart was invaded by worms—leaving euthanasia as the only humane option.

🐾 Here’s what every pet parent needs to understand: Just one mosquito bite can inject microscopic heartworm larvae into your pet. These larvae quietly develop over six months before they’re even detectable—and by the time that lingering cough appears, the damage is often already done.

Adult heartworms don’t just affect the heart. They send offspring into the bloodstream, damaging lungs, liver, and kidneys. And many early signs—like coughing after drinking water—are easy to overlook.

Dr. Zoo also busts the most common heartworm myths:

    • “My pet lives indoors.”
    • “We don’t have mosquitoes here.”
    • “It’s winter—they’re safe now.”
    • “I use natural remedies.”

Spoiler: None of these provide real protection. If a mosquito can get inside your house, it can reach your pet—and no natural product has been proven to prevent heartworm infection.

💸 Prevention is simple and affordable: around $5–$7 a month.
💔 Treatment is complex and expensive: $1,000–$6,000+, multiple medications, painful injections, and strict cage rest for weeks. Even after treatment, many pets live with permanent heart damage.

👉 Whether it’s a monthly chewable, a topical, or an injection, heartworm prevention isn’t optional—it’s critical. Dr. Zoo walks us through what heartworms really do, why prevention matters no matter where you live, and how to protect your pet from suffering or worse.

🎧 Tune in to get the facts, clear the confusion, and make the choice that could save your pet’s life.
