In this episode of The Inner Scoreboard, I'm joined by Mitch Harris for a wide-ranging conversation about the mental side of performance.
Mitch grew up playing AAA hockey in Peterborough before moving into cyclocross and off-road endurance cycling, eventually competing at the elite national level. Today, he works in executive leadership and development, coaches golfers on mental regulation and emotional resilience, and is the creator of Each Shot Matters Once, a mental skills assessment for golfers.
We talk about what endurance sport can teach us about discomfort, emotional regulation, performing under pressure, and the difference between knowing a mental skill and actually being able to use it when it matters.
We also explore the similarities between athletes and executives, the psychology of golf, leadership, identity, fatherhood, and what happens when the thing you're really good at is no longer available to you.
