 At the turn of the 20th century, Lulu Bett leads a life of quiet servitude as a spinster, residing with her sister Ina and brother-in-law Dwight. Often regarded as the familys beast of burden, Lulu remains in the shadows, attending to their needs without complaint. Everything changes when Dwights visiting brother, Ninian, unexpectedly proposes to her, and to everyones astonishment, she accepts.
