概要

At the turn of the 20th century, Lulu Bett leads a life of quiet servitude as a spinster, residing with her sister Ina and brother-in-law Dwight. Often regarded as the familys beast of burden, Lulu remains in the shadows, attending to their needs without complaint. Everything changes when Dwights visiting brother, Ninian, unexpectedly proposes to her, and to everyones astonishment, she accepts. The shock deepens when Lulu returns home alone from their honeymoon, revealing that Ninian was already married at the time of their union. This revelation thrusts Lulu into a turbulent conflict with the self-satisfied Dwight, forcing her to confront her identity and the choices that define her. This novel inspired the 1921 play that made Zona Gale the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for drama. The original ending, where Lulu finds freedom by leaving behind her familys constraints, was deemed too controversial, leading to a reworked conclusion. In this book, however, we explore the authors true vision. (Summary by Christine Dufour)Copyright Fiction Classics アート 戯曲・演劇 文学史・文学批評
