    I know that look.

Today's scripture comes from 2nd Corinthians chapter one, verses 3 and 4.
Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all of our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them, which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

    Today's reflection.

    I'm fine.
Sometimes you believe it, and sometimes you recognize the answer because you used it yourself. The quick smile, the change of subject, the effort it takes to look normal long enough for everyone to stop asking. He don't know another person's story.
Just from a look. But something in their tiredness may feel familiar. Paul calls God the father of mercies and the God of all comfort.
He describes receiving comfort and trouble, and being able to offer that same comfort to someone else. And there is recognition in that. You remember what it meant for hope to reach you when bad news had become what you expected.
For someone living with addiction, a mental health disorder, grief, trauma, or another crisis, hope can sound like something meant for other people. And there may be bills on the counter, messages they cannot face, or a whole house full of people who don't know how bad it really has become. Someone who has lived through deep darkness may be able to speak with a kind of recognition, no shock and no need for a dramatic story, just the willingness to say, I've been in a place where I couldn't see a way forward.
Jesus matters to why I have hope now. And their life never becomes yours to save alone. When someone is in danger, urgent help belongs in the picture.
Prayer can stay right there with the phone call and the people trained to respond. Paul's words leave room for a person who has received help and still needs it. The comfort you share comes from God.
You can speak about his mercy, while other people bring the care you cannot provide. Your suffering didn't have to happen to make you useful either. Yet the life you are rebuilding may put you beside someone who needs to hear that Jesus is real to you, and that help is still worth reaching for.
Recovery truth.

The comfort I've received from God can reach someone who is hurting. Prayer.
Lord, be near the person who is hiding how bad it has become. Help them be heard and receive the help they need. When our paths cross, give me the honesty and judgment to speak about you without pretending I can carry everything.
Amen.

    Practice for today.

Think of something that helped you feel less alone when you were hurting.
If someone shares their pain with you today, leave room for their words before offering your own story.

    A journal prompt.

What helped hope become believable to me when it sounded impossible?

    TRANSCRIPT

    [00:00] Monday, October 19th, 2026, what I couldn't fix.

[00:07] Today's scripture comes from Titus chapter three verses four through seven.

[00:13] But after that, the kindness and love of God, our Savior toward man appeared,

[00:19] not by works of righteousness, which we have done,

[00:21] but according to his mercy, he saved us by the washing of regeneration

[00:25] and renewing of the Holy Ghost,

[00:27] which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ, our Savior,

[00:32] that being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

    [00:39] Reflection.

[00:41] There are promises people make when they're desperate.

[00:44] This is the last time tomorrow will be different.

[00:48] Nobody will ever have to worry about me again.

[00:52] Then tomorrow comes and the pain is still there.

[00:56] Addiction, mental health struggles, and painful experiences can leave a person

[01:01] exhausted by their own attempts to get through a day.

    [01:05] Shame adds another voice.

[01:07] You should be better by now.

[01:08] Look what you're putting everybody through.

[01:11] Another speech about trying harder can feel unbearable.

[01:16] And Titus describes salvation beginning with the kindness and love of God.

[01:20] We are saved by his mercy through Jesus Christ, rather than by the good we have managed to do.

[01:27] For someone worn out from trying to become worthy, that is good news.

[01:32] The gospel is good news for people who cannot go back and repair their entire history.

[01:38] Jesus died for our sins and rose again.

[01:41] Through him, there is forgiveness and a restored relationship with God.

[01:45] His invitation to follow him reaches people who have run out of ways to make themselves look worthy.

[01:53] That includes the person whose shame is about what they did.

[01:57] It also includes the person carrying shame over what somebody did to them.

[02:02] Being harmed was never proof that you deserved it.

[02:07] Faith doesn't make every symptom disappear.

[02:10] Treatment, medication, recovery support, and time may still be part of life.

[02:17] And a difficult day doesn't cancel God's love or turn your testimony into a lie.

[02:23] For someone who has felt beyond help, this can be the beginning of a different life.

[02:28] Being able to tell the truth and still believe there's a reason to keep living it.

[02:33] When that hope has become real to you, talking about Jesus gets personal.

[02:38] You remember what it was like to need mercy and expect rejection.

[02:43] You want the person still in that place to know that you have come to believe Jesus has not ruled them out.

    [02:51] Recovery truth.

[02:53] Jesus’ mercy reaches the parts of my life.

[02:57] I cannot repair by trying harder.

    [03:00] Prayer.

    [03:02] God.

[03:02] I am tired of measuring my worth by how quickly I get better.

[03:09] Thank you for meeting me in the truth.

[03:12] Let your mercy become real to the person who feels as far gone as I once felt.

    [03:18] Amen.

    [03:20] Practice for today.

[03:22] Notice one place where you're treating getting better as a requirement for being loved.

[03:29] Put these words beside it.

[03:31] I still need help and I'm still worth helping.

[03:36] Bring that honesty into a conversation with someone you trust.

    [03:40] Journal prompt.

[03:42] What did I need to hear when I believed I was beyond help?
