Paul has spent three and one half chapters telling us about the bad news. We are all sinners and there is not one righteous on the planet. Therefore we are doomed. Now Paul switches to the BUT GOD event where Jesus enters the fray for us and by virtue of this death, burial and resurrection we can be justified, declared innocent of all sin! Paul is now in his final stage of the bad news before the good news of the Gospel. He will anticipate a big question; Since both Jews and Gentiles are all under sin, then what is the benefit of being a Jew? And of course Paul will give a magnificent answer: He says that the Jews have been entrusted with God's word. You have had God's word to lead and guide you. Paul will now use a smart tool in dealing with people. Encouragement before correction. He will lay out all the privileges of being a Jewish person AND THEN he will will bring out the deeper truth. Being Jewish doesn't save you. Circumcision doesn't save you. And he will finalize it by saying that a real Jew is one of the heart, not of the flesh.
