Zach Clinton is a counselor, author, speaker, and ministry leader. He helps lead the Ignite men's conferences, serves as an athletic counselor in sport and performance psychology at Liberty University, and works with professional athletes across multiple sports. In this episode, he sits down with us to talk about his book, 'Even If', and what it really takes to build a courageous faith.

Here's what we cover:

-What Ignite conferences are, and why they're built to reach men who would never walk into a church

-The story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in Daniel 3, and the three part prayer behind the title "Even If"

-What if, only if, and even if: the difference between a complacent faith, a contingent faith, and a courageous one

-Why following Jesus sometimes leads you straight into the fire, and why the only thing that burned was the ropes

-Why God equips you with friends for the fire, if you have the courage to go looking for them

-"To be 99% known is to be unknown": why the 1% you're hiding matters so much

-Working with pro and college athletes who have millions of followers and almost no real friends

-Zach's own story: growing up in a ministry family, a career changing pitching injury at Liberty, and the low season that became his harvest season

A recommendation led to a 2023 movie called Nefarious, a Christian horror film about a death row inmate who claims to be possessed, and a psychiatrist trying to determine if he's insane or telling the truth. The theology in it is sharper than expected, and it got me thinking about something a lot of us have heard before: the idea that demon possession in the New Testament was just an ancient, unscientific way of describing what we now understand as mental illness.

Looking at several real, documented criminal cases where the person described hearing voices commanding them to act, we need to not be too quick to write off spiritual explanations in these scenarios. In a culture that largely doesn’t believe evil is real, we need the name of Jesus more than ever.

If you or someone you know is hearing voices urging self-harm or harm to others, please treat that as an emergency. Call or text 988 (the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline) or go to your nearest emergency room right away. Prayer and professional care are not in competition with each other, and command hallucinations telling someone to hurt themselves or another person are a serious warning sign that always deserves immediate professional help alongside anything spiritual.
