Matthew chapters 9 to 13 show that Jesus Christ is God who has the authority to remit sin, and the Savior who rules over the power of sin, disease, demons, and death. Matthew chapter 9 is the word in which Jesus comes to people who cannot escape by themselves from under sin, disease, and death, and bestows salvation on them. One after another there appear the paralytic lying on a bed and Matthew sitting at the tax office, the woman who had suffered from a flow of blood for twelve years and the dead girl, the two men who could not see and the demon-possessed man who could not speak. Their circumstances differed from one another, but they were the same in that they could not solve their problems by their own strength. Jesus did not turn away from such people; by remitting sins, healing the sick, and raising the dead, He clearly revealed that He is the true Savior who rules over the power of sin and death.

How are you? It is truly good to see you. There are many things that we cannot do well as we have made up our minds to do. We set our minds this way and that, but in many things our thoughts, our bodies, and our actions fail to follow what we have resolved. So we constantly make resolutions about ourselves. We resolve and even vow, thinking, ‘I must do this,’ or, ‘I did wrong this time, so next time I must do better.’ This is what all people have in common. To be human is precisely to be unable to live as one has made up one’s mind.

There are three elements in worship. The first is hearing the word of God: hearing and believing what God says and what the Lord’s command is. The second is prayer: coming to God and pleading with Him to help us. The third is praise. Praise is testimony. It is laying my faith before God, carried on a melody. It is confessing that the Lord has saved me like this, that I believe the Lord will come again, and that I praise that Lord like this. These three are the elements of worship.

Meeting the paralytic, the Lord blessed him, saying, “Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you” (Matthew 9:2). Jesus has already saved all people from their sins. He has removed all sins. Therefore before Jesus there is no one who has sin. Only, according to the difference of whether one receives this or does not receive it, one either has sin or has no sin.

In Matthew chapter 9 appear people of many kinds. There is the paralytic lying on a bed, unable to move by himself; there is Matthew the tax collector, treated as a sinner by the people of that day; and there are the many tax collectors and sinners who ate with Jesus. On the other side there are the scribes and the Pharisees, who held fast to their own religious righteousness, and there are also those who thought the form of fasting important. Their outward appearances differed, but all of them had one problem in common: the fact that they had to have their problem of sin solved before God.
