• Preface
    2026/08/14

The Gospel of Matthew, as the first book that opens the New Testament, records how the salvation that God promised in the era of the Old Testament was fulfilled through Jesus Christ. Matthew testifies that Jesus is the Christ of promise, who came as a descendant of Abraham and David, and the Son of God, who would save His people from their sins. This book is the first Bible study textbook that expounds the word of Matthew chapters 1 through 4 from the perspective of the gospel of the water and the Spirit.

  • General Introduction
    2026/08/14

The consistent tradition handed down from the early church regards the author of the Gospel of Matthew as the Apostle Matthew, one of the twelve disciples. Church tradition has regarded Matthew the tax collector in Matthew 9:9 and Levi in Mark 2:14 and Luke 5:27 as the same person. However, since the Gospel texts do not directly state that Levi is Matthew, it is more accurate to introduce this as the traditional view that they are the same person, rather than to assert that Matthew’s original name was Levi. When Jesus called him as he was sitting at the tax office, he left everything and followed Him (Matthew 9:9), and he afterward became one of the twelve apostles (Matthew 10:3).

    2026/08/14

Matthew chapter 1 is a chapter that reveals who Jesus is through the genealogy and birth of Jesus Christ. It first introduces Jesus as “the Son of David, the Son of Abraham,” and records the genealogy that runs from Abraham through David and the time of the Babylonian captivity down to Christ. This genealogy includes not only the forefathers of faith and kings, but also women of such diverse backgrounds as Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and the wife of Uriah, as well as people who had human faults and failures. The history of mankind broke down many times, but the history of salvation that God had promised was never stopped. Next, it records how Mary was found with child of the Holy Spirit before she came to live with Joseph, and the anguish of Joseph, who came to know this. Through an angel, God tells Joseph that the baby conceived in Mary is of the Holy Spirit, and that he shall call His name Jesus. Jesus is the One who will save His people from their sins, and at the same time He is the One who fulfills the promise of “Immanuel,” that God is with man. Joseph believes the word of God, takes Mary in as his wife, and names the baby Jesus.

    2026/08/14

Matthew begins by proclaiming “the book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham.” The promise of blessing given to Abraham and the promise of kingship given to David were not cut off even through human failure and through the judgment of the Babylonian captivity. God preserved the genealogy of the promise and at last sent Jesus Christ.

The genealogy in Matthew chapter 1 shows that Jesus Christ came as the son of Abraham and the son of David. Jesus is the seed of blessing promised to Abraham, and the Christ who succeeds to the throne of David and reigns forever.

    2026/08/14

The One whom God the Father sent to this earth as the Savior who would save us mankind from sin is Jesus Christ. To save us human beings, God the Father did not send an angel, nor did He send any other capable creature. To save us, God the Father sent His own Son Jesus Christ as our Savior. God has given us the remission of sin through His Son Jesus Christ.

  • Ch01_05_Sermon_The genealogy of Jesus Christ, which one can enter only by faith
    2026/08/14

Among the four Gospels, the Gospel of Matthew comes first. Matthew 1:1 says, “The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham.” And the reason the genealogy is read on down from verse 2 is to tell how the genealogy of Jesus Christ unfolded and who came into that world. Whatever book of the Bible we read, we must know what that Word is mainly saying, focus on that, and hear and preach the Word accordingly.

  • Ch01_06_Sermon_The Lord who has let us meet the real truth in this age like the age of Solomon
    2026/08/14

In this present age, those who believe in the gospel of the water and the Spirit as we do are people who have received a great blessing from heaven. Looking at this Word and looking at this age, I myself truly thank and thank God. Matthew chapter 1 says, the book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham, and then the genealogy continues: “Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot Judah and his brothers… and Jesse begot David the king” (Matthew 1:2–6). From Abraham to David, faith was passed down truly well like this, and we can see the work of God. But what was it like from Solomon, the son of David, until they were taken away to Babylon? They served idols, committed the sin of changing the law of sacrifice and serving idols, and did things that stood against God. Even after they were taken to Babylon the descendants continued, until at last Jesus Christ was born.
