• Ep. 154: PRACTICAL MAGIC 2 UPDATES | April 2026
    2026/04/24

This week on Magnolia Street, the Stinas are back with a fresh roundup of all the magic swirling around Practical Magic 2—and there’s a lot to catch up on.

We’re diving into the biggest updates from the past two weeks, including Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman’s appearance at CinemaCon, Sandra’s long-awaited debut on Instagram (yes, it finally happened), and the brand new Practical Magic 2 trailer that dropped on April 20th—because of course we have thoughts.

We’re also talking about Nicole Kidman’s announcement that she’s beginning training to become a death doula, and how that beautifully (and eerily) echoes the themes of life, death, and in-between spaces that have always lived at the heart of the Owens story.

All this and more, as we gather around the table to piece together what’s coming next! So pour something cozy, settle in, and join us on Magnolia Street… where the magic is already stirring.

  • Ep. 153: Greenwich Village, NYC in the 1960s | The Real Magic Behind Rules of Magic
    2026/04/17

This week on Magnolia Street, we step into the electric, untamed world of 1960s Greenwich Village.

Inspired by Alice Hoffman’s playlist for The Rules of Magic, we explore how music became a portal into identity, power, and transformation; from Bob Dylan’s protest anthems to Jimi Hendrix’s psychedelic fire and Nina Simone’s spellbinding voice.

We wander through Washington Square Park and descend into the Village’s shadowy nightlife! From the Red Witch to the Zodiac Club in Bell, Book and Candle, we explore how these spaces invited freedom, danger, and transformation. We unpack what inspired Vincent’s introduction into the Owens story, trace the cultural shifts of the era, including the Stonewall riots and the rise of LGBTQ+ movements and follow the lingering ghosts of New York City.

We stop at 44 Greenwich Avenue, the aunts’ magick shop and the real-life office of Alice’s beloved agent, the late Elaine Markson, exploring its history and Hoffman’s tribute to her. We also dive into 1960s witchcraft culture; from Leo Martello to Spiritualist gatherings at the The Ansonia, and examine how media shaped the modern witch, drawing parallels between Bell, Book and Candle’s Gillian Holroyd and Practical Magic’s Gillian Owens.

And in a more personal turn, Justina takes us through the Village venues mentioned in the book, sharing glimpses of her own early music career as a young troubadour navigating the Greenwich Village songwriter circuit, blurring the line between past and present, fiction and lived experience.

Because in The Village, magic isn’t always spells and potions…sometimes it’s following the ghosts of Greenwich back through time to find the songs where they began.

  • Ep. 152: 1970s Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme | Jimmy Angelov's Murder Mobile
    2026/04/10

On this episode of Magnolia Street, we’re taking a closer look at Jimmy Angelov’s 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme—one of the most iconic objects in Practical Magic. What does Jimmy’s sleek car say about his personality, and what might the messy interior reveal about who he really is beneath the surface?

We explore how the car appears in both the book and the film, why the script originally gave Jimmy an ’82 Oldsmobile before switching to the 1970 Cutlass, and whether Jimmy could realistically have afforded a car like this in the first place. We also investigate his Arizona license plate, take a detour through the rise and fall of the Oldsmobile brand, and even connect Jimmy’s car to The Chariot card in the Tarot.

Plus, Kristina uncovers something in the scripts that sends the Stinas tumbling back down the ferry rabbit hole—and we do the math to figure out how long it would actually take Gillian to drive from Arizona to Maria’s Island if Jimmy’s Cutlass was going as fast as it could go. 🚗✨

  • Ep. 151: Henbane | Magick & Lore
    2026/04/03

In this shadow steeped episode, we descend into the dangerous garden of the Owens family grimoire to uncover the true power of henbane, the mysterious nightshade listed in the resurrection spell in Practical Magic.

If belladonna is the poison that killed Jimmy, why would the spell to bring him back contain even more nightshade?

We explore the folklore and pharmacology of henbane, mandrake, and belladonna, the infamous trio of “flying ointment” plants historically associated with witches, trance states, necromancy, and crossing the veil between life and death. Rather than healing herbs, these are threshold plants, botanicals that govern liminal spaces, altered states, and dangerous transformation.

We break down the symbolic logic of using poison to attempt resurrection, the folk magic principle of “like calls to like,” and why dark magic in the Owens lineage requires dark tools.

From graveyard lore to tarot archetypes, this episode asks:

    Is nightshade about death

    or about crossing?

Enter the garden at your own risk.

  • Ep. 150: Magic with a "K" (MAGICK)
    2026/03/27

In this episode of the Magnolia Street Podcast, we explore the curious little letter that has sparked big conversations in the witchcraft community. Why do some practitioners spell it Magick with a K? Where did that come from, and what does it actually mean? Is it simply aesthetic, or does it signal something deeper and more intentional?

We trace the history of the spelling back to early twentieth century occultism and unpack how it became a way to distinguish ritual and spiritual practice from stage illusion and sleight of hand. From ceremonial circles to top hats and playing cards, we look at the cultural fork in the road between occult magick and theatrical magic.

We also reflect on why beloved works like Practical Magic are spelled without the K, and what that choice communicates about intuition, inheritance, and lived enchantment. Does adding the K make something feel more powerful? More serious? More exclusive? Or is everyday magic just as potent without it?

As always, we bring the conversation back to storytelling, symbolism, and the way language shapes belief. Whether you are drawn to candles and grimoires or velvet curtains and rabbits in hats, this episode invites you to consider what kind of magic you practice and why one little letter can carry so much meaning.

Light a candle, shuffle a deck, and step into the conversation with us. ✨

  • Ep. 149: Psychedelics and Witchcraft 🍄
    2026/03/20

Disclaimer: This episode is intended for literary, cultural, and historical discussion only. We do not encourage or endorse illegal substance use. Psychedelics and toxic plants can carry serious legal, physical, and psychological risks. Please make informed, lawful, and safe choices.

In this episode, we explore psychedelics within the Practical Magic universe and beyond. From the unsettling consequences of jimsonweed and LSD in Practical Magic and Rules of Magic, to the cautionary presence of belladonna in Magic Lessons, we trace how altered states appear in the Owens family story — not as shortcuts to power, but as moments of vulnerability, danger, and exposure.

From there, we widen the lens. We take a grounded look at the ritual use of psychoactive substances across cultures, including ayahuasca in the Amazon, peyote in Native American ceremonies, psilocybin mushrooms in Mazatec veladas, San Pedro in the Andes, and iboga in Bwiti initiation rites. What are these substances? What effects do they produce? And how are they used within structured spiritual frameworks meant to guide, contain, and interpret the experience?
