Magical Match, a podcast all about real people with real stories around the important topic of stem cell donation and transplants.

In each episode, I’ll be chatting with donors, recipients, those in supportive roles; and people who have been affected by either a personal experience or through another’s inspirational story.

I hope that by opening the conversation around stem cell donation, we can inspire more people to sign up to the stem cell register, offering more hope to those in need.Copyright 2022 All rights reserved.

  • MM S4 Ep4 - Alex Reeves - Donor
    2026/08/29

In this episode, I chatted with Alex Reeves who works in recruitment, helping personnel leaving the armed forces with their next steps. We discussed Alex’s experience of donating his stem cells for a stranger and the positive impact it has had on him and his life. We also talked about his other fundraising challenges and plans to run the London marathon next year!

I’d also like to share some personal news. In the last month, I have hit a huge personal milestone and some of you may be aware that I have been writing a memoir over the seven years or so about our son, Ben and our family’s own story about his diagnosis of acute myeloid leukaemia and need for a stem cell transplant. I am hugely proud of this book, Family of Five and legacy for my children, which is now available through my website www.grieftogrowthcreative.com

In addition, I have had the opportunity to speak as a Hope Hero on the recent World Marrow Donor Day webinar hosted by the World Marrow Donor Association. This was an opportunity to share our family’s story and give hope to those walking a similar path.

You can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAqUl6M12Ic&t=1s

I always feel so privileged and humbled to be able to speak with such interesting and inspiring individuals on this podcast.

Magical Match is always looking for new guests to share their inspirational stories and if you are that person or those people, we would love to hear from you.

  • S4 Ep 3 - Lesley Calder, DKMS Volunteer Hub, Ann Hargreaves and Max Calder - Family First
    2026/05/04

In this episode I chatted with Lesley Calder, a DKMS volunteer involved with the Hertfordshire and Essex Volunteer Hub, her sister, Ann Hargreaves and Lesley’s son, Max Calder. We discussed Lesley’s experience with her diagnosis of Leukaemia, the luck of finding not one, but two potential matches in her family, Ann’s experience of donating her stem cells to Lesley and Max’s experience of donating to someone in need in America.

There’s only a one in four chance of finding a sibling match, but to have two sibling donor matches feels extraordinary and then to have another member of your family go on to donate to someone else, feels like a real blessing.

You can register to become a stem cell donor with DKMS at www.dkms.org.uk/register if you are between 16 and 55. You can sign up online, which takes moments. You’ll receive a swab kit, which you’ll need to return after doing a quick #cheekswab. Once registered, you’ll be there until you’re 61 years old. You may not ever be contacted, but if you are needed, you could give a family time together or might even save a life.

You can follow the DKMS Herts and Essex Volunteer Hub are and find out more about all that the team are up to at https://www.facebook.com/dkmshertsandessexhub
