  • 25: The Nightingale IRL | Andrée de Jongh
    2024/05/08

The Comet Line helped Allied soldiers evade capture by Germans and return to Great Britain. Soldiers took risky train rides, trekked across dangerous terrain, and spent their nights in safe houses—all the while hoping they wouldn't be discovered. (Or betrayed.) In this episode, Sarah shares the story of the person who led over 118 soldiers through this escape route—not soldier, but a young artist and nurse, Andrée de Jongh.

Through paintings like "Judith Slaying Holofernes" and others, she did not glorify the men in those paintings, but instead portrayed the agency, fierceness, and strength of the women—traits that were so often avoided by the male artists of the day.
