"The mystery of human existence lies not in just staying alive, but in finding something to live for.“ ~ Fyoder Dostoevsky

Our guest is Luke Bowman, a recent graduate of Anchor Bay High School. Luke is an accomplished adaptive athlete, competing in track and field at a very competitive level, winning D1 state championships in the 400 meters and shotput for two straight years: he even wheeled a full 5K in 19 minutes at the Macomb County Championships. Since 2023, Luke has been a fixture at MAC Red meets and an advocate for bringing awareness and opportunities to adaptive athletes.

For reference, wheelchair athletes participate in seated throws, racing events in specialized chairs, and other adapted field events. In comparison, ambulatory athletes can compete in events like running, jumping, and throwing, potentially using assistive devices as needed; for example, a visually-impaired athlete may have a guide runner.

Some of Luke’s accolades include being named the 2024 Sports and Spokes Junior Athlete of the Year, being featured as the Channel 4 WDIV Brag Book Athlete of the Week, and he is an honor roll student, musician, and community volunteer. He’s heading to U of M in the fall as a dual sport athlete for wheelchair basketball and adaptive track & field. Luke will talk to us about his athletic preparation, competition, and advocacy for athletes of all abilities.
