Luke 6:27-36 | Being Merciful

  • サマリー

  • Welcome back! This is the YALife.Vegas Podcast and this week we continue chapter 6 of our study in "The Gospel According to Luke" looking at verses 27-36.

The challenge of the week is: "Can Christians have non-Christian friends?"

A friend, according to the Bible, is a loyal, trustworthy companion who loves at all times, gives wise counsel, shares in both joy and suffering, and is willing to sacrifice for the good of another.

This definition is supported by the following passages:

    1.Loyalty and constant love

A friend loves at all times, And a brother is born for adversity.

    — Proverbs 17:17

    2.Trustworthiness and closeness

Iron sharpens iron, So one man sharpens another.

    — Proverbs 27:17

    3.Sacrificial love

“Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.

    — John 15:13

    4.Mutual support and shared burdens

“Two are better than one because they have good wages for their labor. For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not a second one to lift him up.”

    — Ecclesiastes 4:9–10

    5.Covenant-level faithfulness

David and Jonathan’s relationship models deep friendship:

Now it happened when he had finished speaking to Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.

    — 1 Samuel 18:1

    6.Spiritual encouragement

Therefore, comfort one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing.

    — 1 Thessalonians 5:11

From these Scriptures, we see that a friend is not merely a social companion, but someone deeply invested in your spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being with loyalty, honesty, and love at the core.
