📍 Hosted by Esther Kane, retired OT and certified aging in place specialist and Laurie Newcomb, licensed practicing counselor. This weekly podcast explores one of the most difficult and emotionally complicated experiences many adults will ever face: caring for aging parents when the relationship itself has been painful, manipulative, toxic, abusive, or deeply unresolved.

📍 Each week, Esther and Laurie have honest conversations about the difficult realities many caregivers are afraid to say out loud: the guilt, the exhaustion, the family dysfunction, the impossible choices, and the struggle to balance compassion with healthy boundaries.

📍 Together, they share practical tools, coping strategies, communication techniques, emotional support, and real-world guidance to help caregivers protect their mental health while navigating these complicated family relationships.

  • The Kindness You Keep Forgetting to Give Yourself
    2026/07/27

You show up for your parent every single day — patient, steady, endlessly kind. So why is the one person you’re hardest on always yourself? In this episode, Esther and Laurie sit with the quiet cruelty caregivers turn inward: the guilt, the second-guessing, the relentless inner critic that says you’re never doing enough. They unpack what self-compassion actually is (and the things people wrongly assume it is), why caregiving daughters find it nearly impossible, and where that harsh inner voice really comes from. You’ll learn why kindness toward yourself won’t make you selfish or lazy — and what self-compassion can look like in the middle of an ordinary, exhausting day. Because the person holding everything together deserves to be held, too.

  • Grieving the Parent You Never Had
    2026/07/20

Caregiving can bring up more than exhaustion, worry, and responsibility. It can also uncover a quieter kind of grief: the pain of realizing you never had the parent, or the relationship, you needed.

In this episode of Love, Limits and Aging Parents, Esther and Laurie explore what it means to grieve a parent who is still alive. They discuss the emotional absence, criticism, instability, conditional love, or role reversal that may have shaped childhood, and why caregiving can bring those old wounds rushing back.

They also talk about ambiguous loss, the guilt that often comes with acknowledging what was missing, and the toll this unprocessed grief can take through resentment, burnout, irritability, physical symptoms, and emotional numbness.

Most importantly, this episode offers permission to tell the truth about your experience. You can recognize the ways your parent failed you without denying their humanity. You can grieve what you never received and still care for the person in front of you.

Both can be true. And making space for that grief may be one of the first steps toward caregiving with greater clarity, compassion, and freedom.

  • Letting Go of the Need for Parental Approval
    2026/07/13

Even as grown adults, many of us still long to hear our parents say, “I’m proud of you.” And when that approval has always felt conditional, or never came at all, caregiving can reopen wounds we thought we had outgrown.

In this episode of Love, Limits and Aging Parents, Esther and Laurie explore why the need for parental approval runs so deep, how caregiving can intensify old feelings of rejection and invisibility, and the emotional cost of constantly trying to earn recognition from a parent who may never be able to give it.

They also discuss the grief beneath that longing, the difference between caring from love and caring from desperation, and practical ways to begin separating your worth from your parent’s response.

Letting go of the need for approval does not mean giving up on your parent or loving them less. It means loosening your grip on an outcome you cannot control, and learning to recognize your own effort, value, and humanity, whether your parent acknowledges them or not.
