Gonzaga Bulldogs eye another big man breakout as freshman center Sam Funches joins Mark Few’s frontcourt machine. Can the 7'0 Germantown, Mississippi native follow in the footsteps of Braden Huff and become the next NBA-caliber Zag? Funches’ raw athleticism, shot-blocking promise, and outside shooting intrigue coaches across the country, attracting offers from programs like Kansas, LSU, and Vanderbilt before he chose to come to Spokane.

Andy Patton breaks down Funches’ recruiting journey, projected role as a backup big, and the challenge of developing behind veterans like Braden Huff and Massamba Diop. The conversation highlights how eligibility questions for Izan Almansa and Chauncey Wiggins could shift Funches’ minutes, while exploring best- and worst-case scenarios for Gonzaga’s frontcourt. Patton examines Funches’ upside, expectations for year one, and what it will take for him to eventually make an NBA leap. Will Gonzaga’s renowned player development produce another elite center?
