Kansas State football defeats Kansas 35-24 in the Sunflower Showdown, extending the Wildcats' rivalry winning streak to 18 consecutive games! Avery Johnson and Joe Jackson deliver massive performances as Collin Klein earns his first Big 12 victory. But was this more than another victory over the Jayhawks? After consecutive conference losses to Cincinnati and Houston, Kansas State finally looked like the physical, run-first football team Collin Klein envisioned when he took over the program. The Wildcats rushed for 354 yards, generated 568 yards of total offense and controlled possession for 36 minutes. Joe Jackson led the way with 159 rushing yards on 27 carries, while Avery Johnson added 132 rushing yards and delivered 209 passing yards with a touchdown and no interceptions. Kansas State ran the football on 30 of its 35 second-half offensive plays, physically wearing down the Kansas defense and taking control of the rivalry matchup. But despite the victory, significant concerns remain. We break down Kansas State's red-zone struggles, questionable short-yardage play calls, costly receiver drops and special teams mistakes that prevented the Wildcats from winning by an even larger margin. We also discuss the impressive performance of kicker Luis Rodriguez and the continued emergence of Rodney Fields as another explosive option in Kansas State's rushing attack. With Kansas State improving to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in Big 12 play, attention now turns toward the Wildcats' upcoming road games against Arizona State and Colorado. Can Collin Klein build on this performance, establish a consistent offensive identity and guide Kansas State toward an eight-win season? Kansas State football enters its Big 12 matchup against Cincinnati at 3-0 as Collin Klein and the Wildcats continue emerging as a potential conference championship contender.

Kansas State has quietly impressed in the trenches despite replacing most of its offensive line and losing a returning starter during fall camp. The Wildcats have still developed one of the highest-rated blocking units in college football according to the discussion, continuing a longstanding K-State strength at the line of scrimmage.

But Kansas State vs. Cincinnati is only part of a massive Big 12 weekend.

Oklahoma State travels to West Virginia for one of the conference’s biggest games, featuring quarterbacks Micah Hawkins and Drew Mestemaker. Both teams have an opportunity to strengthen their College Football Playoff résumés and establish themselves as legitimate Big 12 contenders.

Colorado and Baylor also meet in an important matchup after Colorado’s difficult loss to Northwestern. With Texas Tech, Utah, Oklahoma State and Kansas State looming on Colorado’s schedule, the pressure surrounding the Buffaloes could increase quickly.

Plus, TCU travels to UCF, Houston visits Georgia Southern, and the Big 12 continues searching for teams capable of separating themselves in the conference race.

Kansas State Wildcats stumble in Big 12 opener as Avery Johnson battles without enough support. Can Collin Klein’s squad regroup in time for a crucial matchup against Houston?

Christian Rauh spotlights Johnson’s performance—30-for-50 with 292 passing yards and 38 rushing yards—while questioning the lack of designed quarterback runs and costly drops from receivers like Garrett Oakley. The breakdown zeroes in on defensive woes, with Kansas State surrendering 271 rushing yards and three touchdowns to Cincinnati’s Cole Tabb. Missed opportunities in the “middle eight,” key injuries to playmakers, and questions around tackling efficiency further complicate the Wildcats’ playoff hopes. With a bye week and a must-win against Houston ahead, can Kansas State shore up its defense and reignite its offense?
