This week I speak with Chyana Marie Sage, Chyana is an award-winning Cree, Metis, and Salish Poet, Author, and model. She is the first Indigenous graduate from Columbia University’s MFA in Creative/Non Fiction. Chyana was the first person in her cohort to become a published author. Her Debut gift to us all is her memoir Soft as Bones . It is an intricately woven story about her life growing up as a middle sister in an abusive household. She intertwines her story of pain, rage, and the generational trauma that so many of our families share, all While, eloquently braiding in the process of healing through Indigenous teachings and ceremony. Chyana has given us a glimpse of hope and resilience. Proof that we can all make it out of the darkness and Soar. Please enjoy my chat with Chyana.

  • LANDBACK BADDIE Thómas Lopez Jr

Welcome back, this week I speak with Thomas Lopez Jr. AKA Landback Baddie! Thómas was born and bred to be an activist. Having both parents deeply involved in the Chicano and the American Indian movements, Thómas has activism and community action in his blood. As a young adult, Thómas joined the Standing Rock encampment and like so many who were there answered the calling to carry on the torch for global indigenous rights, climate change awareness, and of course the land back movement. But don’t get it twisted, we are talking about activism with a side of body and gender positivity! When he decided to stand in his truth, Thómas noticed his following starting to grow exponentially. Today, he uses his public platform to inspire queer, indigenous people, to walk in their authenticity. What a beautiful gift it is to truly be ourselves. Enjoy the show.

Welcome Back to Lets have a powwow, I am your host Amy Farid. Happy Pride month and for our relatives up north Happy Indigenous History Month! I had the pleasure of talking to Omar Monroy, A Trans, Indigenous Mexican jewelry designer and artist. Omar’s, Jewelry line El Techichi, features statement pieces Hand crafted out of vintage metals and Gemstones. What drew me to their Jewelry was that Omar’s creations seem to tell us a story about Her indigeneity. The pueblo her family is from, the food their Abuelita makes, and the animalitos who inspire her. We discuss her upbringing as an undocumented immigrant living in the Inland Empire, being a fat femme, and the struggle to find their identity and voice. Omar, take it away!

Ha.Way! Welcome back! This is a special on the road episode. My family friend and brother back home John Parker asked if I would like to help out with hair on the New Sterlin Harjo show filming in Tulsa. Of course I wanted to come back home and work on Sterlins Production cuz it is literally history in the making. But I also wanted to come home and record an episode specifically with JohnParker. John is an unforgettable person. We are kindred spirits and seeing him spread his wings and step into his Light is Beyond exciting! You may recognize John as the Financial Aid Advisor, Ms. Debbie on Season 3 of Rez Dogs. Ms. Debbie stole the show with her 49 songs and hair whippin’ shenanigans! It was literally “a star is born” moment for people that don’t know of JP, but for family and friends we’ve seen the greatness that is John Parker. We record this episode the day after John’s sisters wedding. So here we are on the come down from a beautiful wedding and party, raw and uncut aye! Enjoy!

This episode is perfect for the budding filmmaker or fashion designer. Not only are Razelle and Jontay Roomates, they are also incredibly talented! They followed their dreams and New York City welcomed them with open arms. Razelle was urged to apply to NYU Tisch school of film, and not only was she accepted, she was given a full ride scholarship. Jontay was approached by Parsons school of design after seeing his BFA collection and was invited into the fashion design program on a full scholarship as well! I wasn’t playing when I said they were talented! They are blessed and highly favored by the ancestors!
