Ik zat net te denken aan iets wat een collega van mij zei. We hadden een vergadering en hij zei: "Nou, daar hebben we een klap op gegeven." Ik dacht echt, waar héb je het over?Yeah, great. I was just thinking about something a colleague of mine said. We had a meeting and he said: "Well, we've made a decision on that." I really thought, what are you talking about?Maarten: Haha, ja, een beslissing nemen. Dat is typisch zo'n uitdrukking waar je als buitenlander niks van snapt.Haha, yeah, making a decision. That's typically one of those expressions that as a foreigner, you don't understand at all.Lisa: Precies! En dat bracht me op een idee. We moeten het eens hebben over die onvertaalbare Nederlandse woorden en uitdrukkingen.Exactly! And that gave me an idea. We should talk about those untranslatable Dutch words and expressions.Maarten: Goed plan. Waar wil je beginnen? Ik neem aan bij het woord waarover de meeste boeken zijn geschreven?Good plan. Where do you want to start? I assume with the word most books have been written about?Lisa: Jaaa, 'gezellig'! Oh, ik hou van dat woord. Ik probeerde het laatst uit te leggen aan een vriendin uit Engeland. Dat is echt een uitdaging. Ik zei "It's like... cozy, but with people... and fun... but also calm?" Ze keek me aan alsof ik gek was.Yesss, 'gezellig'! Oh, I love that word. I recently tried to explain it to a friend from England. That's really a challenge. I said "It's like... cozy, but with people... and fun... but also calm?" She looked at me as if I was crazy.Maarten: Haha, ja, dat is de klassieke situatie. Het is de sfeer die je hebt met de mensen met wie je bent. Het gaat niet per se over de activiteit zelf. Het is een gevoel van verbondenheid.Haha, yeah, that's the classic situation. It's the atmosphere you have with the people you're with. It's not necessarily about the activity itself. It's a feeling of togetherness.Lisa: Oh wacht, precies! Je kunt een borrel hebben met collega's die helemaal niet gezellig is. De drankjes zijn er wel, maar de sfeer waarin je met elkaar praat, die is er dan niet.Oh wait, exactly! You can have drinks with colleagues that aren't 'gezellig' at all. The drinks are there, but the atmosphere in which you talk to each other, that's not there.Maarten: Inderdaad. De omstandigheden waaronder je iets doet, zijn cruciaal. Een kopje thee op de bank, met een dekentje en een goed boek, dat kan al enorm gezellig zijn.Indeed. The circumstances under which you do something are crucial. A cup of tea on the couch, with a blanket and a good book, that can already be incredibly 'gezellig'.Lisa: Ja, of stamppot eten bij je oma! Dat is de ultieme gezelligheid. Weet je waar ik ook aan moest denken? Aan de uitdrukking 'doe maar normaal, dan doe je al gek genoeg'.Yeah, or eating 'stamppot' at your grandma's! That's the ultimate 'gezelligheid'. Do you know what else came to mind? The expression 'just act normal, that's crazy enough'.Maarten: Ah, de onofficiële slogan van Nederland. Het is de mentaliteit waarmee veel mensen zijn opgegroeid. Probeer niet te veel op te vallen.Ah, the unofficial slogan of the Netherlands. It's the mentality many people grew up with. Try not to stand out too much.Lisa: Echt hè? Ik vind het soms een beetje beperkend. Waarom mag je niet een beetje uit de band springen? Op Koningsdag mag het gelukkig wel. Dat is de ene dag waarop iedereen losgaat.Right? I sometimes find it a bit limiting. Why can't you let loose a bit? On King's Day, you're allowed to, fortunately. That's the one day everyone goes wild.Maarten: Dat is waar. Dat is de uitzondering die de regel bevestigt. Maar in de politiek zie je die houding ook terug. Denk aan het 'poldermodel'.That's true. That's the exception that proves the rule. But you also see that attitude reflected in politics. Think of the 'polder model'.Lisa: Oh ja, dat woord... wat was dat ook alweer? Iets met overleggen tot je erbij neervalt?Oh yeah, that word... what was that again? It's sometimes difficult to distinguish the real news from that.Lisa: Nou, inderdaad. Ik probeer de actualiteit wel een beetje te volgen, maar ik heb echt geen geduld om een hele krant door te spitten.Speaker 1: Well, indeed. I do try to follow current events a bit, but I really don't have the patience to dig through an entire newspaper.Maarten: Nee? Ik vind het juist wel fijn om in het weekend rustig de krant te lezen. Even geen scherm.Speaker 2: No? I actually find it nice to quietly read the newspaper on the weekend. No screen for a bit.Lisa: Oh wacht, dat snap ik wel. Maar doordeweeks? Geen tijd voor. Dan scan ik gewoon de koppen op een nieuwsapp. Veel efficiënter.Speaker 1: Oh wait, I get that. But during the week? No time for that. Then I just scan the headlines on a news app. Much more efficient.Maarten: Dat is waar. Maar je mist dan wel de context. Het is moeilijk om een compleet beeld te vormen door alleen krantenkoppen te lezen.Speaker 2: That's true. But you do miss the context then. It's difficult to form a complete picture by only reading headlines.Lisa: Hm, ja, misschien wel. Voor de context keek ik vroeger eigenlijk altijd naar De Wereld Draait Door. Dat was een goede manier om snel bijgepraat te worden.Speaker 1: Hm, yes, maybe so. For context, I used to always watch De Wereld Draait Door. That was a good way to quickly get up to speed.Maarten: Zeker, dat programma was een fenomeen. Het is jammer dat er zo'n nare sfeer achter de schermen bleek te zijn.Speaker 2: Certainly, that program was a phenomenon. It's a shame that such a nasty atmosphere turned out to be behind the scenes.Lisa: Ja, al die ophef over die presentator... Ik schrok daar echt van. Je verwacht het gewoon niet, hè? Ik vond dat altijd zo'n leuke show. Elke aflevering was weer een feestje. Maar nu... pff.Speaker 1: Exactly! You see that with programs like The Voice too. I always thought that was such a fun show. Every episode was a party. But now... pff.Maarten: Ja, door die onthullingen is het toch lastig geworden om er nog onbevangen naar te kijken.Speaker 2: Yes, because of those revelations, it has become difficult to watch it with an open mind.Lisa: Echt wel. Ik zap nu ook altijd weg als de reclame begint. Vroeger bleef ik nog wel hangen, maar nu denk ik: ik heb geen zin om dit hele circus te steunen.Speaker 1: Absolutely. I now always zap away when the commercials start. I used to stay tuned, but now I think: I don't feel like supporting this whole circus.Maarten: Ik snap het. As soon as the Dutch national team plays, it's as if a kind of national fever breaks out.Lisa: Precies! Straten worden oranje versierd, mensen kopen oranje kleren... terwijl ze normaal gesproken misschien nooit een wedstrijd kijken.Exactly! Streets are decorated in orange, people buy orange clothes... while normally they might never watch a match.Maarten: Dat is waar. Het gaat dan ook meer om de sfeer dan om de prestatie op het veld, denk ik. Hoewel een overwinning natuurlijk wel helpt.That's true.
