Lynnette Frances Fischer Callow, a vibrant force of compassion and intellect, passed away unexpectedly at 37, leaving behind a legacy of love, generosity, and passion. A proud graduate of Highland Community College and a dedicated Senior Accounts Payable Specialist for Littler-Mendelson, she balanced professional excellence with heartfelt charity—using every birthday and holiday to support Harvesters Community Food Network. Her kitchen was her sanctuary, where slow food artistry met soulful joy, and her fingers danced across clarinet and guitar. A loyal Jayhawk and Chiefs fan, she cherished time with her nieces and nephews, weaving warmth into every moment. Survived by her parents, siblings, and extended family, Lynnette’s spirit lives on through the lives she touched. Memorial contributions welcome; services to be announced.

Lawrence city commissioners narrowly approved the 2027 budget with a controversial property tax hike—upping the mill levy to 35.178, a 1.5-mill jump—to fund critical services like the public library, now at its legal maximum. Despite rising home values, residents voiced frustration that their concerns weren’t adequately addressed during months of debate. Tough cuts include 12 firefighter positions despite opening a new station and reduced healthcare contributions for employees. The firefighters’ union praised the commission’s safety focus, while some commissioners expressed deep unease, citing residents barely making ends meet. The vote split 3-2, with two commissioners backing the capital plan but opposing the tax increase—highlighting an ongoing struggle to balance fiscal needs with affordability.

An 82-year-old Kansas serial killer, John Robinson, is back in court as his latest appeal challenges whether his original defense team failed to properly contest the prosecution’s “common scheme” theory — a key argument that led to his death sentence. His current attorneys claim crucial legal and evidentiary oversights could have altered the outcome, but the state counters that Robinson was represented by top-tier capital defense experts who did thorough work. Justice Caleb Stegall voiced skepticism over blaming past lawyers for failing to foresee future legal interpretations. This high-stakes battle underscores the enduring complexities of death penalty appeals — where decades-old convictions remain under legal scrutiny, even as new arguments emerge.

FBI Director Kash Patel faced fiery cross-examination at a Senate hearing this week, as Democrats demanded assurances the FBI won’t interfere in upcoming midterms—something Patel dodged with evasive answers. Senator Cory Booker unleashed a scathing tirade, calling Patel a “lackey,” while Patel fired back with barbs about Booker’s presidential dreams. Other senators vowed investigations into Patel’s leadership, especially over controversial agent firings. The hearing veered into surreal territory when senators questioned whether someone convicted of bestiality could still join the FBI—Patel clarified that voluntary acts disqualify candidates, and jail time usually follows. Election interference concerns resurfaced with references to Nevada subpoenas and Georgia ballot seizures; Patel defended FBI presence by citing election crime coordinators nationwide, then accused critics of being Trump loyalists. The session also looked ahead to AI, with senators warning about rogue hacking tools—and Patel said the FBI is already reviewing AI models and targeting creators of dangerous systems.
