Kept in the Dark is a captivating novel by 19th century English author Anthony Trollope. First published in eight monthly installments in 1882, this story unfolds the life of Cecilia Holt, who ends her engagement to the indifferent Sir Francis Geraldine. Seeking a fresh start, she travels abroad and meets Mr. George Western, a man heartbroken by his own romantic misfortunes. They marry, but Cecilia conceals her past engagement from him, despite his honesty about his own history. When Sir Francis reveals her secret, George feels betrayed and leaves for abroad, prompting Cecilia to return to her mother in Exeter. However, her sister-in-law plays a pivotal role in mending their fractured relationship. Interwoven throughout the narrative is a delightful comic subplot featuring one of Cecilias friends who tries to win over Sir Francis.
