  • 18,000 wounded reached Istanbul after Lüleburgaz retreat
    2026/11/02

In 1912, the Eastern Army retreated from around Kırklareli and fought along the Vize–Lüleburgaz line as Bulgarian forces pressed toward Çorlu and the Çatalca line near Constantinople. A reported 18,000 wounded soldiers reached Istanbul, where the Mekteb-i Sultanî became a military hospital. 🏥🪖

The turning point came on 24 October, when Abdullah Pasha ordered a general retreat after Ottoman attacks failed, leaving artillery, baggage and heavy equipment behind. The withdrawal grew disorganized as Bulgarian artillery and infantry pressure increased, and the front was still being reassembled while fighting continued.

The episode follows the physical strain of war: dwindling ammunition, continuing Bulgarian fire, weak supply, divided command and inadequate communications. It also traces concrete wartime spaces and services, including Saray, Karahasan village, Edirne’s limited hospital capacity, a German Red Cross surgical team, and the three-storey hospital in the Mekteb-i Sultanî building.

The lingering question is how to weigh the battle’s dating, its command failures, and the relative roles of artillery, logistics and leadership in the Ottoman retreat. Jewels of History examines when Lüleburgaz truly began, why the retreat became so disordered, and what reached Istanbul afterward.

  • Cannon fire misled Wang Tong at Tốt Động and Chúc Động
    2026/11/02

By early November 1426, Lam Sơn forces were hidden at Tốt Động and Chúc Động near Cao Bộ, after moving north from Thanh Hóa and Nghệ An into the Red River region. Wang Tong brought Ming reinforcements from Đông Quan to attack the area. 🔥🌾

The decisive rupture came when Lam Sơn commanders learned of the Ming use of cannon fire as a signal, then fired a cannon signal of their own. The Ming columns kept advancing into restricted ground, where the concealed troops struck from multiple directions and broke the formation.

The episode grounds the battle in muddy rice fields, sedge, difficult footing, and the roads that compressed the advancing force. It also follows the capture of horses, military supplies, and weapons after the retreat, along with the concealed positions at Tốt Động and Chúc Động and the sound of gunfire used as a signal.

The exact day remains reconstructed, with the engagement placed between 6 and 10 November 1426 and probably on 7 November. The casualty totals also remain unsettled, with Vietnamese sources giving about 50,000 killed and more than 10,000 captured, while other estimates are lower. Jewels of History examines when the battle was fought, how the signal was used, and why the numbers remain uncertain.
