The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church is one of the oldest Christian traditions in Africa and an important witness to the history of Eastern Christianity. Its roots reach back to the ancient Kingdom of Aksum, where Christianity became established under King Ezana during the fourth century AD. According to the early church historian Rufinus, two young Christians from Tyre, Frumentius and Aedesius, arrived in the Aksumite kingdom after their ship was attacked.

Frumentius eventually traveled to Alexandria, where Bishop Athanasius consecrated him as bishop for the Aksumite Christians. Known in Ethiopian tradition as Abba Salama, meaning “Father of Peace,” Frumentius became a foundational figure in the establishment of the Ethiopian Church.

The Ethiopian Church developed a distinctive Christian identity through its connection with Alexandria, its ancient Semitic language of Geʽez, its biblical traditions, and its rich liturgical heritage. Its name Tewahedo (ተዋሕዶ) means “unity” or “being made one,” expressing its Miaphysite understanding of Jesus Christ as fully divine and fully human, united without separation or confusion.

Unlike the churches of the Byzantine and Latin worlds, Ethiopia preserved many distinctive religious customs, including strong Old Testament influences, fasting traditions, biblical chanting, and a broad scriptural heritage. The Ethiopian biblical canon is traditionally associated with 81 books, although the contents and arrangement of the broader canon vary among manuscript and printed traditions. It includes writings such as 1 Enoch, Jubilees, and the three books of Meqabyan, which are absent from most Western biblical canons.

The Ethiopian Church also developed remarkable monastic traditions, especially through the influence of the Nine Saints, remembered as missionaries and monastic teachers who arrived around the late fifth and early sixth centuries. Centuries later, the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela became enduring expressions of Ethiopian Christianity, symbolically recreating Jerusalem in the Ethiopian highlands.

Historically, it is important to distinguish the biblical account of the Ethiopian official baptized by Philip in Acts 8 from the documented fourth-century Christianization of Aksum. The Acts narrative demonstrates an early Christian connection with the region called Ethiopia in Greek sources, but it does not establish a continuous institutional history of the later Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Similarly, traditions about the Queen of Sheba, Menelik I, and the Ark of the Covenant, preserved in the Kebra Nagast, are central to Ethiopian religious identity but cannot all be verified as historical events.

The significance of the Ethiopian Church in Christian history is that it reminds us Christianity was never exclusively European or Western. From Jerusalem and Alexandria to Aksum and the Ethiopian highlands, Christianity developed within African and Middle Eastern cultures, preserving ancient languages, theological traditions, biblical interpretations, and forms of worship that remain alive today.

The Church of Alexandria stands among the most ancient and influential centers of Eastern Christianity. According to early Christian tradition, the Church was founded by St. John Mark the Evangelist in the first century AD, establishing an apostolic heritage that became central to the identity of the Coptic Church.

Alexandria, renowned for its great library, philosophical schools, and diverse Jewish and Greek communities, became a meeting place between biblical faith and Hellenistic intellectual traditions. The Catechetical School of Alexandria, associated with great Christian teachers such as Clement and Origen, helped shape early Christian theology and biblical interpretation. Alexandria also became the birthplace of organized Christian monasticism in Egypt, through figures such as St. Anthony the Great and St. Pachomius.

Its greatest theological leaders included St. Athanasius and St. Cyril of Alexandria, who defended foundational teachings concerning the divinity of Christ and the Incarnation. Following the Council of Chalcedon in AD 451, the Alexandrian Church experienced a lasting division between Chalcedonian and non-Chalcedonian communities.

Through centuries of persecution, martyrdom, scholarship, and spiritual devotion, the Coptic Orthodox Church preserved its distinctive Egyptian Christian heritage, becoming one of the most enduring witnesses to the faith of the early Eastern Church.
