Flying saucers were a brand-new mystery in the late 1940s and early 1950s. After the initial excitement known as “saucer mania” that started in the summer of 1947 had died down, the U.S. Air Force had an active investigation program that operated after 1952 as Project Blue Book, and private saucer investigation groups formed that same year. Both the Air Force and the private investigators felt that an answer was within reach, and there were those who felt that it might involve creatures from other planets or even other dimensions.

This book looks at the recorded history left behind by the investigators. It also looks at the interactions among them, as well as the interactions between them and a public that was sometimes skeptical and at other times accused the Air Force, and even the private investigators, of a cover-up. The story of the flying saucer investigators is as much about the people who investigated the saucers as it is about the saucers and who or what might be behind them.

Bio

CHARLES LEAR has many interests, of which UFOs take up more than a little of his time. His main interests in the UFO subject are in the documented history the phenomenon has spawned and the people who investigate it, as this book reflects. Charles’ other interests are geology and paleontology and his familiarity with science and its disciplines informs his approach to the UFO subject. Having lived most of his life in New York City, where he made his living as a union stagehand and was involved in other aspects of theatre as a playwright, producer, director and Shakespearean actor, Charles now resides in New York, USA.
