Ernakulam is home to Kochi, popularly known as the Queen of the Arabian Sea and widely recognised as the Commercial Capital of Kerala. With its natural harbour, international port, modern transport systems, IT hubs and thriving service sector, the district serves as one of southern India’s most important centres of trade, tourism and maritime activity.

Historically, the region was closely connected with Muziris, the legendary ancient port that linked Kerala with Rome, Arabia and other parts of the world through the spice trade. After the decline of Muziris, Kochi emerged as a major harbour and became an important centre of Portuguese, Dutch and British colonial activity.

The Portuguese established Fort Emmanuel at Kochi in 1503, while the Dutch captured Kochi in 1663. These successive influences can still be seen in landmarks such as MattancherryPalace, St. Francis Church, Santa Cruz Basilica, the Paradesi Synagogue and the Chinese Fishing Nets of Fort Kochi.

Geographically, Ernakulam extends fromthe Arabian Sea and Kochi backwaters in the west to the forested highland areas in the east. The Periyar River, Kerala’s longest river, plays a major role in the district’s water supply, agriculture, industry and settlement pattern.

The district is also known for major islands and waterways, including Willingdon Island, one of India’s largest artificial islands, created during the development of Cochin Port.Kochi is home to the Kochi Water Metro, India’s first integrated water-based urban transport system.

Ernakulam also holds immense strategic importance. Kochi houses the headquarters of the Southern Naval Command, along with major naval establishments such as INS Venduruthy and INS Garuda. The district is further connected globally through Cochin International Airport, known for becoming the world’s first airport to operate fully onsolar power.

Culturally, Ernakulam represents Kerala’s unique blend of tradition, maritime heritage and cosmopolitan life.Festivals and art forms such as Athachamayam, Cochin Carnival, Onam, Mudiyettu, Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Chavittu Nadakam and Margamkali reflectthe district’s diverse cultural identity.
