In this episode, we explore District–46: Chatra District, popularly known as the “Gateway of Jharkhand” due to its location near the Bihar border.

Chatra is a powerful district where history, spirituality, plateau geography, forests, waterfalls, coal economy and development challenges come together. It is famous for the Battle of Chatra during the Revolt of 1857, where Jai Mangal Pandey and Nadir Ali were captured and hanged near Phansi Talab.

The district is also known for the Itkhori Temple Complex, a major Hindu–Buddhist–Jain heritage site, and Kauleshwari / Kolhua Hill, an important sacred landscape near Hunterganj.

Geographically, Chatra is part of the Chotanagpur Plateau and is shaped by rivers like Lilajan / Niranjana, Mohana and Morhar. Natural sites like Tamasin and Bichkiliya waterfalls add to its eco-tourism value.

Economically, Chatra is important for the North Karanpura Coalfield and NTPC’s 1,980 MW power project at Tandwa. It is also part of NITI Aayog’s Aspirational Districts Programme, making it important for governance and development studies.
