Each week comedy writers Gareth Gwynn and Esyllt Sears explore a different month in history – but with a brief stretching from the mid-70s to the present day. Basically, if you could see it, it would be in colour.


It’s politics and pop culture for the eighties, nineties, noughties and beyond, delivered in 20 minute hits because we know what your attention span is like.

So if you remember Westlife but struggle with the Westland affair and if your favourite Aitken was a Tory MP or the one who co-wrote I Should Be So Lucky, we’ve got you covered in this ridiculous historical guide to the information age (even if that information came from a poorly recalled browse of Encarta ‘95).

These weekly episodes are interspersed with interviews with the people who lived through this period to understand whether it has had any bearing on the lives they lead today.

    On today's episode, Esyllt talks us through the first ever "anklet tag" - a subject Gareth knows a concerning amount about thanks to three series of the BBC Radio 4 sitcom Ankle Tag - which he co-wrote with Benjamin Partridge. As such, much of this episode is taken up by him trying to remember what's real and what they made-up for jokes, but we have checked and it turns out you now CAN'T disable an ankle tag using a freezer. I think they've closed that particular loophole. Anyway, once you've listened to this episode there's three series of the sitcom to enjoy on BBC Sounds or Audible.

    We're going to Wembley! But not for any sporting reason.


    In July 2007 there were two enormous concerts just days apart, so if you avoided a trip to Wembley, well done you. Did you go to The Concert for Diana? Or what about Al Gore's Live Earth? And what were they for? Gareth and Esyllt try, and fail, to find out.

    (I usually set these to publish at 5am-ish but I'm going for midnight tonight to catch that "can't sleep in this heat" crowd).


    Have you been to a sports day this year? And if not, was that because it was too hot or too cold? Can go either way. On today's episode we talk about the era in which sports days did happen - for better or worse. Esyllt recalls her disastrous sports day of July 1990 - and then, like an episode of BBC World Service's Sporting Witness, she returns to the scene - having attended her primary school's 150th anniversary do.
