このコンテンツについて

50 years ago, opportunities for women and girls in sport were few and far between. Enter Title IX. In 1972, Title IX legislation was passed, which banned gender-based discrimination within government-funded institutions. While this wasn't directly intended to affect the male-dominated sports culture, it opened the doors for equality on the field. This limited series features in-depth interviews with women who lived through the cultural shift that Title IX represented, including icons like Joan Benoit, the first winner of the women’s Olympic marathon; Marianne Martin, the first woman to win the Tour De France Feminine; Bobbi Gibb, the first woman to finish the Boston Marathon; as well as athletic directors and athletes who continue to press for change today. Here at Feisty, none of us would be where we are today without the changes that came from the passing of Title IX. It's time to pay some respect to the women that made our dreams a reality.Copyright 2023 Feisty Media 世界 衛生・健康的な生活

  • Running Your Own Race with Joan Benoit Samuelson
    2022/08/11

This is it, folks. The final episode of our limited, and dear Title IX series! This week, we have one of our favorite athletes and mentors on the podcast - Joan Benoit Samuelson. Joan was the winner of the very first women's Olympic Marathon in the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. Having come into the realm of sport at the exact time of the passing of Title IX, Joan reflects on what that did for her career - and how far we've come.

Interviewed by Joan's family friend, Sarah True, the duo discuss what it means to run your own race. Joan pays homage to those women before her that made her win possible and gives us a run-through of that day back in 1984. Finally, she shares what it meant to her to have gained the title of the First Women's Marathon Winner.

  • IX: Fighting Back with Amanda Leve
    2022/08/04

10 months ago, Amanda Leve shocked the wrestling world with a huge upset win over the seemingly indomitable Gabi Garcia. At 25 years old, Amanda is a professional MMA fighter and considered one of the top grapplers of her generation. This week, Selene Yeager talks to Amanda about her experience as a young woman in sport. While the majority of the women we've had on this series were alive in the years following the inception of Title IX, Amanda gives us her perspective on the ways Title IX has helped/hindered her wrestling career in the modern day.

Selene and Amanda discuss the inner workings and nuances of women's wrestling and the sexist beliefs held by many institutions. From fighting against the boys, to being told women's wrestling is too "intimate" to be allowed, Amanda has seen it all. And of course, Selene asks Amanda all about that win against Gabi Garcia.

    2022/07/28

If you've played a team sport, you understand just how influential they can be. Having an understanding of camaraderie, competition, and collaboration can change the course of someone's life. For a long time, those benefits were only afforded to men. Enter Title IX.

This week, Sara Gross interviews Janet Cone - the athletic director at UNC Asheville. Janet has been in this role for over 18 years and has made monumental progress for women's sports by adding both women’s golf and women’s swimming to its NCAA lineup. Sara and Janet discuss the changes that have come over the past 50 years and the effort it took, and continues to take, to create equal opportunities for women and girls in sport.
