  • S01E03 - Book 2 - The Morning Reflection
    2025/11/06

In this episode of The Primary Texts, we explore Book 2 of Marcus Aurelius' Meditations, where philosophy becomes daily practice.

Gone is the gentle gratitude of Book 1. Now Marcus faces forward into another day of imperial duties, preparing himself with honest morning reflections. He acknowledges he'll meet difficult people who are "meddling, ungrateful, arrogant, dishonest" but recognises they act from ignorance, not evil. They share his nature. They were born to work together.

We examine Marcus's famous principles: "The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way." We explore the View from Above, the discipline of present-moment awareness, and the concept of universal sympathy (sympatheia) that connects all things. Through multiple translation comparisons, we see how Marcus uses morning philosophy not as positive thinking but as realistic preparation for being human among humans.

This episode shows philosophy not as abstract theory but as emergency medicine for each day's challenges.

  • S01E02 - Book 1 - Debts and Lessons
    2025/11/04

In this episode of The Primary Texts, we explore Book 1 of Marcus Aurelius' Meditations, his remarkable gratitude list written at the end of his life.

Unlike the rest of the Meditations, Book 1 isn't philosophical struggle but pure acknowledgment. Marcus thanks seventeen people who shaped his character: his grandfather's courtesy, his mother's simplicity despite wealth, his tutor's intellectual discipline, his teachers who introduced him to Epictetus, and his adoptive father Antoninus Pius who modeled how to wield power without corruption.

This isn't just ancient gratitude practice. Marcus shows us how character forms through observation, how virtue is caught rather than taught, how we become who we are by watching others be who they are. We explore each entry in detail, examining what Marcus learned from each person and what this reveals about his values and understanding of the good life.

This is Episode 2 of our complete journey through the Meditations. New listeners can start here or with Episode 1 (Introduction) for fuller context.

  • S01E01 - Introduction to Marcus Aurelius' Meditations
    2025/11/04

Welcome to The Primary Texts, where we explore philosophy's foundational works completely and deeply. In this introduction to our Meditations series, we meet Marcus Aurelius - the Roman Emperor who never wanted to rule, writing desperate notes to himself by candlelight on the frozen Danube frontier.

Discover how the most powerful man on Earth used philosophy as survival tactics, wrestling with the same problems we face: procrastination, anger, anxiety, and meaninglessness. Learn why these private journals, never meant for publication, have survived 1,900 years and speak directly to modern struggles.

We'll explore Marcus's reluctant path to power, the crises that defined his reign (plague, war, personal tragedy), and how Stoic philosophy became his emergency medicine for the soul. This episode prepares you for the complete 13-episode journey through all twelve books of the Meditations.

The Primary Texts reads actual texts, not summaries. Philosophy as it was written, engaged with completely.
