🎙️ Episode 13 | No Quitters Podcast — Luis Payan: From Surviving Gang Violence to Serving as Police Captain
In this powerful episode, Dan Rey and Venny Saucedo sit down with Luis Payan, a Captain with the Garden Grove Police Department who has served his community for 25 years.
Growing up in Santa Ana, CA during the 80s and 90s, Luis witnessed firsthand the peak of gang violence — with weekly drive-by shootings just outside his home. But thanks to the guidance of his father, who instilled hard work, discipline, and strong morals, Luis stayed on the right path.
From a young age, he knew he wanted to wear the badge. At just 5 years old, he dreamed of becoming a police officer — and he never let go of that vision. Despite the chaos around him, even the gang members in his neighborhood respected his father and knew to leave Luis out of their world.
Now, after a lifetime of service, Luis has gone back to the very neighborhoods he grew up in — working to build trust between law enforcement and the community while inspiring the next generation to rise above their circumstances.
This is a story of resilience, discipline, and giving back — a true reflection of the No Quitters mentality.
