Historyas is a podcast for anyone who uses English to communicate or to learn, and wants to practice Spanish through storytelling, the way language has traveled through tales for thousands of years. Each episode is one story, a legend or an intriguing scene from history, with you at the center of it, whispered in your ear. Expect a supernatural, macabre edge: witches on trial in the Basque mountains, a werewolf standing trial in Galicia, ghosts, hauntings, and the things nobody could fully explain. Some stories turn genuinely scary, especially for young kids. Plenty of other listeners, of all ages, love exactly that part. Listen at your own discretion. Great listening for Halloween, Día de los Muertos, or Noche de Difuntos, though honestly, any night works. If your Spanish is not quite there yet, no problema. Each episode sets the scene in English, then turns to Spanish: the legend still told across the country, and the historical facts beneath it. Listen once, as if it were music. You will understand more than you think. Then listen again with the transcript, which comes with every episode, along with the translation and a key vocabulary list at historyas.com. Los hispanohablantes también lo pasarán de miedo. Prefer to watch? The live recordings of the trailers are on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@Historyas.podcast/videos. This special episode for Halloween, El Día de los Muertos and La Noche de Difuntos is a double bill: a legend within a legend. We travel to the old city of Soria, a city with more legends than roads, and to the ruins of a monastery that once belonged to the Knights Templar. There, on the Night of the Dead, La Noche de Difuntos, in that empty ruined chapel, the bell tolls... and there's nobody there to ring it. No one alive, that is.

The episode opens in English, then turns to Spanish to tell the legend Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer wrote down in 1861: Beatriz, Alonso, and a blue ribbon lost on a haunted mountain.

Soria, Noche de Difuntos. En la capilla en ruinas de los Templarios, la campana dobla sola. Beatriz ha perdido una cinta azul en el Monte de las Ánimas, y Alonso sale a buscarla.

A note: this is a ghost story, and it is genuinely scary in places. Listen at your own discretion, especially with young kids.
