Harrisburg, Illinois, was asleep when a tornado warning went out at 4:44 AM on February 29, 2012. The supercell responsible had already produced an EF3 tornado near Ridgway fifteen minutes earlier and was moving northeast at about fifty miles per hour. This documentary reconstructs the pre-dawn minutes in which the tornado crossed into Saline County, reached EF4 intensity, and cut through the heart of a city of nine thousand people, leaving a damage path half a mile wide in places before lifting near the Saline River. Eight people died and more than one hundred were injured. The episode places the storm within a Midwest outbreak that produced forty-one tornadoes in twenty-four hours, examines why many residents never heard the warning in the darkness, and follows the recovery, including the memorial built in a downtown park listing the names of the eight who were lost.
