We're joined by Nancy Barile, award-winning author of "I'm Not Holding Your Coat", an insightful chronicle of her life as an OG Philadelphia/Boston punk who lived through the golden age of hardcore music as it evolved in real time before her eyes.

The Ramones, Bad Brains, Misfits, Minor Threat, Black Flag... You name it, she saw it. We talk about the legendary brawl in Kensington, booking the infamous "Gathering of the Tribes" show, cold calling CBGBs to get bands booked, and bumping elbows with just about every legendary figure in hardcore punk, and much more.

Her husband, the late great Al Barile of SSD, was a pioneer of the straight edge movement and a name brought up often on HardLore throughout the years. He sadly passed away in April of 2025, and we talk all about their chance meeting, his impact on us, and share stories of Al through the years and look back at his perception of how straight edge and hardcore music have grown since his early days in SSD. An incredibly informative and cathartic conversation and an episode we've wanted to make happen for a long time.

HardLore's spooky spin-off is back... Welcome to HauntLore VII: Where we explore The very haunted Chicago Metro.

This iconic Chicago landmark broke ground in 1927, but transitioned into an all purpose live music venue and dance club in 1979, and the basement's "Smartbar" was one of the earliest regular homes to Industrial music throughout it's infancy...

But a few mysteries and tragedies haunt the walls of the Metro, where a dramatic suicide, the tragic death of a child, and a pair of disembodied legs are said to roam the building at night. Watch as we thoroughly explore the unseen corners of this nearly 100 year old build and learn the sad origins of the spirits within. Thanks to Joe, Kristy, Skunk, Three and the Metro for having us!

HardLore is joined by AFI vocalist Davey Havok in person at Brain Dead Studios for a landmark episode, weeks before the release of their new album "Silver Bleeds the Black Sun" on Run For Cover Records.

Part 1 of this 4+ hour conversation begins with Davey's origin to punk/hardcore music, and by association, straight edge and veganism. We thoroughly dive into AFI's chronology, beginning in 1991 when he started the band with drummer Adam Carson in high school, to all the twists and turns before finally adding long time bass player Hunter Burgan, and the guitar player that would ultimately define the AFI sound: Jade Puget.

We discuss "Answer That and Stay Fashionable", frustrations with Nitro Records throughout "Very Proud of Ya", "Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes" and beyond, fully coming into their own with "Black Sails in the Sunset", wearing their love of the Misfits on their sleeves on the "A Fire Inside" & "All Hallows" EPs, "The Art of Drowning" being their first record to chart on Billboard, his experience making the Son of Sam record with the 2000 lineup of Samhain just a few years before "Sing the Sorrow" would take over the world, the severe damage done to his voice by singing in his iconic incomparable register throughout the past three decades, and much, MUCH more.
