概要
On 23 October 1707, a fleet of twenty-one vessels returning from the Mediterranean campaign ran toward the Western Rocks west of the Isles of Scilly. Under Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell, HMS Association, HMS Monmouth, HMS Eagle, HMS Romney and Firebrand were among the ships caught in the disaster. ⚓🌊 At approximately 8 p.m., HMS Monmouth fired a warning shot indicating danger, but many ships could not respond in time. HMS Association grounded on the Gilstone Rocks, Shovell died with his flagship, and the fleet’s position proved fatally wrong. No single documented error explains the approach. The wreck left behind cannon, cannon balls, anchors, dividers, spoons, forks, pocket watches, combs and an ebony-and-brass carpenter’s rule. St Clement’s Church, Knowlton preserves a marble memorial to John and James Narborough, who were lost in the Scilly wreck and remembered as “were unfortunately Shipwreckt in the Night upon the Rocks of Scilly”. The episode keeps open how far poor navigation, faulty compasses, bad weather and the north-setting Rennell current each shaped the loss, and why the fleet’s position remained so uncertain. Jewels of History examines how the wreck unfolded, what the surviving evidence can and cannot prove, and why the disaster still matters.
