Acts 16 is the account of Paul and Silas bringing the gospel of Jesus Christ to Philippi. The presence of Christ filled this city as many turned to him repentance and faith, and then formed a church. Paul loved this new church. Later, he wrote the letter of Philippians to them. It, too, is filled with Christ. Today we take up this letter to fill our souls with Christ for his glory and our joy.

As in other cities where the gospel was first preached by Paul and his mission team, many people in the city of Thessalonica believed in Jesus as Messiah and confessed him as Lord. What stands out about these new believers is that they received the gospel in much tribulation and with great joy. It is hard to imagine how Paul could say more about how utterly powerless human achievements are for justification before God, and how effectual the cross of Jesus Christ is to make us right with God. He says it all here. Human merit counts for nothing before God. The cross of Christ is the only sufficient merit for our salvation. Here at the end of Galatians, if we are still clinging to our goodness, this passage will strip us bare. And if we are aware that we need a Savior, this passage offers us Christ who died for our sins to give us everything.
