  • Love & Money #6: The Charter
    2024/10/12

Debates over Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms have ramped up with the Québec government and other provincial administrations testing the limits of the constitution.

In a unique in-depth conversation, Anne-France and the Dean of Canada's premeire law school discuss the recent offensive on the Charter by politicians, particularly in Québec with bills 96 and 21 related to language and secularism.

Featured Guest: Robert Leckey, Dean, McGill Law School in discussion with Anne-France about recent challenges to the Charter by Québec's government and ongoing legal battles on the Notwithstanding Clause, a controversial provision in Canada's constitution that can hinder minority rights.

  • Love & Money #5: Animal Rights
    2024/10/08

Animal welfare law must become an integral part of family law, Anne-France argues, especially in Quebec since the long overdue recognition of animal sentience in 2015. But there is still much work to be done.

Since 2015, municipal governments across the province and even in Quebec's largest cities like Montreal and Longueuil have failed to adopt best practices and policies in line with the reforms. Two of Canada's most promient animal welfare lawyers discuss recent legal progress, as well as offer a behind-the-scenes look into prominent cases involving deer overpopulation and pitbull-type dogs that have made headlines worldwide.

Anne-France's dog Mr. Spot, a pittie mix who became a mascot for dog parents in Montreal, also makes a special appearance.

Featured Guest: Sophie Gaillard, Director of Animal Advocacy and Legal and Government Affairs, SPCA Montreal, on her legal battles, sometimes alongside Anne-France, to encourage municipalities to follow provincial animal welfare laws and consider biodiversity.

Legal Brief: Anne-France outlines some best practices for dog owners, how to manage disputes, and explains how to appeal a "dangerous dog" designation.

Anne-France also explains how innocent parents can get caught up in the system while her guest shares first-hand knowledge of the provincial agency and explains the shocking treatment of teens in the system as soon as they reach the age of majority.
