On the same November afternoon in 2013 that Washington, Illinois, was devastated, a separate tornado struck the small town of Gifford in east-central Illinois. This episode reconstructs that storm, which touched down at 1:23 PM roughly three miles southwest of town and carved a 7.2-mile path in eleven minutes before lifting at 1:34 PM. Survey teams rated it EF-3, with maximum winds estimated at 140 miles per hour. The documentary traces the atmospheric setup that day, including extreme wind shear, unstable air, and the moderate risk issued by the Storm Prediction Center that morning, and situates Gifford within an outbreak that produced at least thirty-three tornadoes across seven states. It then turns to a question raised by the wreckage: why mobile homes remain among the deadliest places to be in a tornado, and what the research on shelter access says about who survives and who does not.
