  • Louder Than the Silence: Suicide Prevention and the Courage to Ask
    2026/09/07
September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, but for Erica Gifford Mills, suicide prevention isn't something that belongs to one month, one campaign, or one social media post. It is personal.
In this deeply personal solo episode of Get Rooted Radio – Living It Up, Loving It Up, Letting It Go, Erica shares the story of her son, U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant Conner Mills, and how losing him to suicide transformed unimaginable grief into a mission.
Erica talks candidly about the silence and stigma surrounding mental health, particularly within military and veteran communities, while breaking down suicide warning signs, what to say when you're worried about someone, what not to say, and why asking the uncomfortable question can save a life.
She also shares the story and mission behind Rooted In Service, created in Conner's honor to advance education, awareness, advocacy, and suicide prevention for active-duty service members, Veterans, their families, and the communities that love them.
This isn't an episode about statistics. It's about people. It's about conversations. It's about refusing to look away. And it's about becoming louder than the silence.

  • Living in the After: When Survival Becomes a New Beginning
    2026/08/17
What happens after tragedy, after the funeral, after the headlines fade, and after everyone else returns to their lives?
Award-winning author, speaker, retired paramedic, psychology student, and Miss Classic Colorado 2026 Teri Busse joins Erica on Get Rooted Radio for an honest conversation about Living in the After.
After the unexpected death of her husband and the devastating murder of her son, Teri faced the unimaginable task of rebuilding a life she never expected to live. She shares how losing her husband changed her life, while losing her son changed what she chose to do with it. Together, Erica and Teri explore grief without an expiration date, resilience without toxic positivity, and the difference between simply surviving and intentionally creating a meaningful life after loss. They also discuss Teri’s writing, advocacy, scholarship program, podcast, publishing work, and her upcoming project, Stop Saying No for Them.
This conversation is a reminder that survival is not the end of the story. Sometimes, it is the beginning of what comes next, and your story is not over.
