  • Louder Than the Silence: Suicide Prevention and the Courage to Ask
    2026/09/07
September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, but for Erica Gifford Mills, suicide prevention isn't something that belongs to one month, one campaign, or one social media post. It is personal.
In this deeply personal solo episode of Get Rooted Radio – Living It Up, Loving It Up, Letting It Go, Erica shares the story of her son, U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant Conner Mills, and how losing him to suicide transformed unimaginable grief into a mission.
Erica talks candidly about the silence and stigma surrounding mental health, particularly within military and veteran communities, while breaking down suicide warning signs, what to say when you're worried about someone, what not to say, and why asking the uncomfortable question can save a life.
She also shares the story and mission behind Rooted In Service, created in Conner's honor to advance education, awareness, advocacy, and suicide prevention for active-duty service members, Veterans, their families, and the communities that love them.
This isn't an episode about statistics. It's about people. It's about conversations. It's about refusing to look away. And it's about becoming louder than the silence.
