In this episode, we examine the doomed Walcheren Campaign of 1809, one of the largest and most controversial British operations of the Napoleonic Wars. Launched as part of the War of the Fifth Coalition, the expedition aimed to seize the Scheldt Estuary, destroy the French fleet at Antwerp, and weaken Napoleon's grip on Europe. Instead, the campaign became a military disaster marked by delays, poor coordination, difficult terrain, and the devastating spread of "Walcheren Fever."

Special guest & author Jacqueline Reiter will discuss how Britain assembled a massive expeditionary force of nearly 40,000 troops, captured the island of Walcheren, and advanced toward Antwerp before disease crippled the army. Learn about the key commanders, the strategic importance of Antwerp, French defensive measures, and why the operation ultimately failed to achieve its objectives.

Was the Walcheren Campaign a missed opportunity to strike a major blow against Napoleon, or was it doomed from the start by flawed planning and logistical challenges? Join us as we explore one of the most expensive failures of the Napoleonic era and its lasting impact on British military strategy.

In April 1809, Napoleon faced one of the greatest challenges of his military career when Austria launched a surprise offensive against the French Empire. With his forces scattered across Bavaria, Napoleon moved with incredible speed to regain the initiative, setting the stage for the dramatic Regensburg (Ratisbon) Campaign.

In this episode, special guest Jack Gill will explore how Napoleon rapidly concentrated his army, defeated Austrian forces at Abensberg, Landshut, Eckmühl, and Regensburg, and forced Archduke Charles to retreat across the Danube. The campaign showcased Napoleon's operational brilliance, his ability to exploit enemy mistakes, and the aggressive leadership that made him one of history's most successful commanders.

We examine the key decisions made by both Napoleon and Archduke Charles, the role of the French marshals, the fierce fighting around Regensburg, and the famous moment when Napoleon was lightly wounded while observing the assault on the city walls. The victories of April 1809 restored French momentum and opened the road toward Vienna, setting the stage for the climactic battles of the War of the Fifth Coalition.
