このコンテンツについて
Breaking news from the smoky wizard tower, folks — apparently, Gandalf is trending, and no, it’s not because he’s started an OnlyFans for wizard hat fashion. Sir Ian McKellen, everyone’s favorite White Rider and my personal spirit animal for Aging Gracefully While Wielding a Staff, just dropped wizard-level spoilers at the For the Love of Fantasy con in London. According to pretty much every entertainment rag worth its salt, including Entertainment Weekly and AOL, Gandalf is officially returning to Middle-earth in “The Hunt for Gollum.” That’s right. The beard is back, and Frodo’s tagging along — allegedly. McKellen teased the crowd with “there’s a character in the movie called Frodo, and there’s another character called Gandalf,” which I guess technically counts as news, even if he didn’t confirm he’s putting the hat back on. Elijah Wood was at the event with the other Hobbit alumni, looking like he still hasn’t aged since the Bush administration.
Here’s the scoop: Andy Serkis, aka Gollum — yes, the guy who made hissing attractive to a generation — is directing this movie, while Peter Jackson, the grand conductor of all things “Middle-earth is filmed in New Zealand,” is producing. So, expect a lot of lush vistas, bare feet, and at least two mandatory scenes of Gandalf being cryptic and then heroic just when you’ve left the room for popcorn. They’re slated to start filming next May, with a theatrical release set for December 2027. Question is, will McKellen make it to premiere night playing Gandalf or just photobomb the party dressed as a disco wizard? His own words: he’ll come back “if I’m alive.” Those are the kind of performance reviews we need more of.
Fans are already speculating on X (formerly Twitter) and if you believe social media, Gandalf has been sighted everywhere from LA’s Erewhon grocer to, weirdly, someone’s wedding in Nebraska, because everyone needs a plus one who can banish in-laws with a “You shall not pass!”
And for those following the academic crowd, Gandalf’s still popping up in the think pieces. Recent essays compare his famous death-and-return arc to, I kid you not, the resurrection of biblical figures. There’s also robust debate about his place in the great wizard pantheon, but I’ll save that for “Marcus Ellery’s Deep Dive into Pointy Hats and Authority.”
So, in sum: Gandalf is more alive in pop culture than most Kardashians, and this new movie looks set to keep him there until at least 2027, health, weather, and cursed jewelry permitting.
