Gamer's Kingdom — deep dives into JRPG and video game music. How composers like Nobuo Uematsu craft emotion through harmony, orchestration, and sound design. Hosted by Emi Giaquinta — video game composer, author of A Book To Call Home: The Music of Final Fantasy IX, Berklee graduate, Summa Cum Laude. Started as an audio podcast in June 2024, now also a full video series on YouTube — with score analysis and audio comparisons. 🎮 youtube.com/@emigiaquinta | emigiaquinta.comEmi Giaquinta SF

  • Nobuo Uematsu Broke His Own Rule (Cosmo Canyon · FFVII)
    2026/08/23

Nobuo Uematsu said he deliberately avoided big, game-defining melodies for Final Fantasy VII — he wanted realism, not spectacle. So why is Cosmo Canyon one of the most unforgettable themes he ever wrote? I pull the score apart to find out: how a single drone and an unchanging groove build a whole atmosphere, why a pentatonic melody on a shakuhachi sounds so specifically ancient and Japanese, and where that "ancient" feeling really comes from.

  • Aerith’s Theme — The Saddest Song in Gaming Was Never Written to Make You Cry
    2026/07/18

Everybody knows this melody, and almost everybody knows what it means. But when Nobuo Uematsu wrote Aerith's Theme, he had no idea Aerith was going to die. This episode goes bar by bar through the full orchestral score: the added ninth that makes the opening ache, the borrowed minor chords hiding under a bright major melody, the "D Mixolydian" myth (busted, with the score to prove it), and the 30-year story connecting Uematsu, a fan who gave Aerith her only lyrics, and the song he finally wrote to say goodbye to her in 2023.Hosted by Emi Giaquinta — video game composer, author of A Book To Call Home: The Music of Final Fantasy IX, Berklee graduate, Summa Cum Laude.🎮 youtube.com/@emigiaquinta | emigiaquinta.com

  • One-Winged Angel Part 2: The PS1 Trick, Stravinsky, and the Leitmotif You Missed
    2026/06/21

Part 2 of our One-Winged Angel deep dive — and this one goes behind the sound itself.

How did Square fit a full Latin choir into 512 kilobytes of RAM? The answer is one of the most ingenious pieces of audio engineering in gaming history: Square's proprietary AKAO engine stored the choir samples at a full octave above their intended pitch, then let the PS1's sound chip slow them back down. The formants dropped. The voices became denser, warmer, heavier. A hardware limitation became the most iconic choir sound in gaming.

Then we follow the classical DNA — the Stravinsky string ostinato borrowed for the brass punches, the Orff-style choral block writing — and the leitmotif most people have been missing for 28 years: the "Sors immanis" choir melody is a direct quote of Sephiroth's character theme, hidden in the shadows of Nibelheim for 40 hours before Uematsu exploded it.
