Sean's third episode in the From the Wilderness series turns inward, tracing the specific, personal cost of taking a ministry calling seriously inside institutions that were never built to hold the people they form. From a $100-a-week ministry job to a family estate settled without him, from a friend lost to incarceration to a chronic injury that reshaped his understanding of rest and worth, this episode is the rawest of the three. It's not a story about theology in the abstract. It's about what happens when the theology you were handed has no framework for grief, burnout, or a body that can't keep producing on command.

I tell you about a boy I went to school with who died in gym class, and about the youth group whose name literally meant "Regarding Everyone As Loved." I take you into the stadiums and dark mazes of 1990s and 2000s youth evangelism culture, Acquire the Fire, Teen Mania, Hellstop, and what actually happened to the organization behind them. And I tell you, for the first time anywhere, about losing my grandfather, nearly losing my father, and a summer that hollowed me out in ways I didn't have words for yet.

This is the episode where the theology gets personal. Where a faith built entirely around departure meets an actual hospital room, an actual empty chair, an actual homesick kid a hundred miles from anyone who knew his name.

You probably know someone who can map out the entire timeline of the Rapture, the signs, the players, the sequence, but couldn't tell you the name of a struggling neighbor two pews over. That's not a coincidence. That's a theology.

In this first full episode, I trace the actual history behind Fundamental Dispensationalism, a system barely 150 years old that convinced generations of American Christians it was simply "what the Bible plainly says." We go from J.N. Darby and the Scofield Reference Bible into what this framework actually costs a church when its real mission quietly becomes prediction instead of discipleship, pulling in David Platt's challenge about the absence of the "sinner's prayer" anywhere in Scripture, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer's warning about cheap grace.

I also tell you two stories from my own life I've never fully told anywhere else, growing up under a well-meaning prophecy teacher who taught his view as settled fact, and years spent in a grief-driven Bible study where asking an honest question got me labeled as "corrupted" by my own seminary education.

This isn't a takedown for the sake of a takedown. It's an argument for what the church's actual mission was always supposed to be, and where I've landed myself: an inaugurated eschatology that trades the escape hatch for restoration.

It’s a reconstruction, built from real formation, real seminary training, and real loss, toward a faith sturdy enough to survive contact with an actual human life.
