From Jefferson and Franklin’s proposed Great Seal depicting the Israelites’ flight from Egypt to the Puritans’ vision of a “new Zion” in the New World, McClay explains how Scripture inspired America’s earliest generations. He shows how the Exodus narrative echoed through the Revolution, guided Abraham Lincoln, fueled abolitionists and civil rights leaders, and continues to serve as a symbol of deliverance from bondage in every age.
