Leadership Lessons From Joshua

Message Title: Leading With Obedient Faith

The name “Joshua” is the Greek form of the Hebrew name “Jesus,” both of which mean “Jehovah is salvation.”

Joshua 1:1–2, (NIV)

“After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ assistant: ‘Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them—to the Israelites…’”

True leadership begins with courageous obedience to God’s Word.

Leadership begins long before the title; it begins with faithfulness in obscurity.

Joshua 1:6 (NIV)

“Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them.”

Joshua 1:7 (NIV)

“Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you…”

Joshua 1:9 (NIV)

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged…”

Leadership requires doing what God says even when you don’t know how it will turn out.

God didn’t give Joshua a battle plan — He gave him a Bible plan.

Joshua 1:8 (NIV)

“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night.”

You lead best when you lead from the Word.

Without God’s truth, courage turns into pride or foolish risk.

But with God’s truth, courage becomes faithfulness in action.

True worship begins by understanding all that Christ has done for you.

Genesis 22:2 (NIV)

"Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you."

Genesis 22:8 (NIV)

"God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son."

Genesis 22:12 (NIV)

"Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son."

God provides in worship

Genesis 22:5 (NIV)

"Stay here... while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you."

Colossians 3:17 (NIV)

“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

Either everything is worship, or nothing is.

Does our posture of worship match our testimony?

Rev. 12:11 (NIV)

“And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.”

I worship with all I have, because without Jesus I have nothing left.
