概要

The Breaking Point — How a Shot in the Pennsylvania Wilderness Set the World on Fire.

In 1754, a 22-year-old Virginia militia officer named George Washington fired a volley in the forests of Pennsylvania that a British politician later said "set the world on fire." That single event set off a chain reaction — a world war, a bankrupt British empire, a taxation crisis — that made the American Revolution not just possible, but inevitable.

This is American history told honestly. No myth. No agenda. Just the real story — messier, more complicated, and more extraordinary than anything you learned in school.

Hosts Amanda and Harry bring you inside these events from two perspectives — an American curious about her country's origins and a British historian whose nation was on the other side of it all.

    Founders Unwound — E04

Episode Title: The Long War — From the Delaware to Yorktown

From Revolution to Republic — How America Was Made

At approximately eleven o'clock on the night of December 25th, 1776, George Washington began loading the remnant of his Continental Army into Durham boats on the Pennsylvania bank of the Delaware River.

It was snowing. The river was running with ice. The temperature was below freezing. Many of his men had no shoes. Some wrapped their feet in rags. Those who did have shoes left bloody footprints in the snow.

Washington had nine days. Nine days before the enlistment contracts of most of his army expired. Nine days before the force he had spent months trying to hold together simply went home. He had been retreating for four months. He had lost New York. He had lost most of New Jersey. Thomas Paine had written by firelight that these were the times that try men's souls.

Washington was about to find out if they were too tired to fight.

The attack on Trenton on the morning of December 26th was a complete surprise. The Hessian garrison had celebrated Christmas and was not prepared. Washington's exhausted, frostbitten force captured over nine hundred prisoners while losing not a single man killed in action. Within days Washington struck again at Princeton. The army that had been dissolving found a reason to re-enlist. The revolution that had been dying found a reason to continue.

That was December 1776. The war would not end until October 1781 — when a British army of eight thousand men surrendered at Yorktown while a band played a tune called The World Turned Upside Down.

Eight years. From the Delaware to Yorktown. This episode covers the war that the Declaration of Independence announced — the crossing that saved the revolution, Saratoga and the French alliance that changed everything, Valley Forge and what was built in the suffering there, Benedict Arnold and the most famous act of betrayal in American history, and the final campaign that ended British ambitions in North America.

Amanda and Harry examine not just what happened but why it matters — Washington's strategic insight that winning meant simply surviving, the French alliance that Saratoga unlocked, and the extraordinary decision at the end that no one in 1781 could have predicted: a victorious general voluntarily surrendering his command to a civilian government.

That last act is the one Harry says he is still thinking about. It may be the most important decision in American history that almost no one discusses.

  • All Men Are Created Equal - The Declaration of Independence and the Promise America Has Spent Two and a Half Centuries Trying to Keep
    2026/08/02

In the summer of 1776, a thirty-three-year-old Virginia lawyer sat in rented rooms in Philadelphia and wrote a sentence that would define a nation — and haunt it.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.

In Episode Three of Founding Unwound, Harry and Amanda dig into the Declaration of Independence — not as a monument, but as a document. Where the words came from. What Jefferson actually meant. What was written and then deleted. Who those words included in 1776, and who they did not. And how generation after generation — people the Declaration never mentioned — picked up that language and used it to demand that America become what it had promised to be.

This is the most philosophically rich episode of the season so far. No shortcuts. No comfortable answers. Just the document, the man who wrote it, and two and a half centuries of Americans wrestling with both.

Hosted by Alan Best. Featuring Amanda and Harry.

  • The Shot Heart Round the World

Episode Title: The Shot Heard Round the World

    Founders Unwound — Season One

April 19, 1775. A cold morning. A silent green in Lexington, Massachusetts. And a single gunshot that nobody has ever been able to explain.

No one knows who fired first. Not the British. Not the colonial militia standing across from them in the mist. But by the time the smoke cleared, eight American men were dead, and a war that would create a nation had begun.

This was not the story you read in a textbook. This was farmers and tradesmen — untrained, outnumbered, and staring down the most powerful army on Earth — making a decision that changed history before they even understood what they were deciding.

In this episode, we unwind the real events of Lexington and Concord — the confusion, the courage, and the mystery that still surrounds the first shot of the American Revolution.
