Wrestling With God: The Night Jacob Became Israel — Genesis 32:22–32

Jacob entered the night afraid, alone, and out of plans. By morning, he walked forward with a limp, a blessing, and a new name. In this devotional, we explore one of Scripture’s most mysterious encounters — Jacob wrestling with a divine Being until daybreak. Why did God meet Jacob in the dark? Why touch his hip? How could Jacob appear to prevail? And what does this struggle teach us about our own battles with surrender, obedience, and trust?

Ephesians 6 brings the entire journey of the Christian life to its turning point: we don’t live in fear, but in confidence. Paul calls us to “be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might,” reminding us that the power, victory, and security we need are already ours in Christ. The armor of God is not something we put on and take off—it is the permanent clothing of our new identity. Truth, righteousness, peace, and salvation remain on us because the new life remains on us. Only the shield of faith must be lifted intentionally when the enemy sends fiery darts of doubt, fear, accusation, or temptation. The sword of the Spirit is not for attacking Satan but for defending purity, guarding the mind, and standing firm just as Jesus did in the wilderness.

Paul shows that the armor is not fear‑based protection for frightened believers—it is confident clothing for those who know who they are and whose they are. We stand firm not to win a victory, but to hold the victory Christ already won through His death and resurrection. Prayer becomes the atmosphere in which the armor works, keeping us alert, grounded, connected, and aligned with God’s will.

After walking through Ephesians—blessed, awakened, made alive, united, growing, renewed—we now stand strong. Not because we are able, but because Christ has made us able. This devotional closes the series with the final declaration: we stand strong because we can.

Ephesians 4:17–5:21 calls every believer to live differently - to put off the old self, be renewed in the spirit of the mind, and put on the new self created in righteousness and holiness. Paul shows that transformation is intentional: we clean out the closets of the old life and dress in the new wardrobe Christ provides. Truth replaces falsehood, reconciliation replaces anger, generosity replaces selfishness, grace‑filled speech replaces corruption, and forgiveness replaces bitterness. Then we walk it out in love, in purity, in light, and in wisdom as we are empowered by the Holy Spirit. The old life is gone; the new life is here. You are a new person in Christ. Dress like it, live like it, and walk in the power of the Spirit.

In Ephesians 4:1–16, Paul shows that spiritual growth is never a solo journey. We grow up in Christ through unity, shared gifts, and mutual encouragement. Christ has designed each believer’s race and apportioned the grace needed to run it—unique assignments, unique gifts, one unified body. Humility, longsuffering, and bearing with one another in love make unity possible, and unity makes maturity possible. As each part does its work, the whole body builds itself up in love. When we cheer one another forward in our race, we grow into the fullness of Christ together.

One New Family
