    In the fourth chapter, "Next", Merridy escapes from her paralyzed car, walks to her mother's apartment building only to watch it burst into flames.

    As she walks away from the disaster area, a childhood memory of abuse at her mother's hands rises in her mind.

    She reaches home, packs some camping gear, saddles her mare and takes off with her dog Pooter, headed for Bakersfield and her Aunt Anita.

    Behind her, the city burns for days, and as earthquakes shake down what is left of the buildings, the smoke blends with the clouds, and it starts to rain.

    That night, Merridy begins to dream.

  • What and Always

    In the second chapter, "What", the next day of Merridy's life begins with the unimaginable end of everything. Yet Merridy is still here, and she has to come to terms with the new "now". 

    In the short third chapter, “Always”, a new voice emerges, unfamiliar and unexplained. It speaks in the first person, but doesn’t seem to be a person at all. The source of this perspective will be up to you to figure out.

    Following the reading, an explanation of the science and the implications of the world-ending event if it were to happen to in real life. Let's hope that reality remains stranger than fiction.

    It is Merridy's worst day at Such A Deihl Printing, where she learns that her boss expects her to rescue all of their diminishing accounts despite an impending recession, her mother wants to take her to have a mammogram, Pakistan is threatening war, and Jack is breaking up with her. It feels as if the world is about to end, and there is nothing she can do about it.

    The story begins with the first chapter, appropriately titled "First". Following the reading, a little background about where the concept of NowHere came from and how it became a novel.
