In the fourth chapter, "Next", Merridy escapes from her paralyzed car, walks to her mother's apartment building only to watch it burst into flames.
As she walks away from the disaster area, a childhood memory of abuse at her mother's hands rises in her mind.
She reaches home, packs some camping gear, saddles her mare and takes off with her dog Pooter, headed for Bakersfield and her Aunt Anita.
Behind her, the city burns for days, and as earthquakes shake down what is left of the buildings, the smoke blends with the clouds, and it starts to rain.
That night, Merridy begins to dream.
