  • Ethics: The story of Jonah, Religious Nationalism, Deportations and MAGA Christians
    2025/05/11
@UnconventionalPastorPaul talks of how ethical decisions must be made ahead of difficult situations that require a higher level of morality. The lack of such ethical foundations, Pastor Paul argues, are why the Republican Christian view of Immigrants, today, parallels the view of Jonah and people not of his race and religion; and why the god of Jonah's story asked him "How's that feeling of disdain for others working out for ya?"

  • The Comfort of the Mob or Courage of a Spirit of Christ
    2025/03/10
Why do people join a sectarian church community? Or MAGA? Or a mindset group like conspiracy theory followers? It's to gain identity from inclusion in that group. Too often, that group turns inward to become an "us" and soon starts looking to demonize "them" - those who are not us. And once demonization and dehumanization starts of "them," out come the torches and pitchforks and everyone better LOOK OUT! Getting out of the mob is messy and scary and, according to Pastor Paul... totally worth it. Come listen to the Unconventional Conversation.

  • Jesus Didn't Speak English? Learning from the Aramaic Jesus
    2025/02/20
It shocks western Christians sometimes to realize Jesus isn't American and didn't speak English. Neil Douglas-Klotz, PHD has written about Jesus through the language or Aramaic, which was Jesus' actual native tongue. The book is an approach to Jesus’s recorded words and teachings to answer many questions clearly and consistently, even if unexpectedly, no matter which Gospel one has in their hands. Paul and Ashley discuss with Dr. Klotz why Aramaic’s multiple meanings can provide revelation and even transformation through the way of the prophet of Nazareth. It shows how Jesus’s deepest teachings address contemporary challenges, such as our relationships with nature and each other, as well as the purpose of life itself.
